Check engine light ??

Yesterday when I started my truck it kind of reved up for a fracition of a second when it started. After that the check engine light was on. It stayed on for all day and half of today and then when I started it the last time it was off. and has'nt been on since. My question is what could have gone wrong and what does that light mean. I also thought that the light comeing on ment a trouble code on the ECM and you had to go to a dealer to get it cleared ?? Or can you take the battery loose to clear the ECM ?? Can the ECM clear its self ? Any help in understandig the function of the Check engine light and ECM is greatly appreciated.

You set a code try and turn your key on and off 3 times with out starting the motor and see what code flashes in your odometer.

Then post the code.

Thanks, tried it and the code was P- 1693 the P- done. Anyone know what this means??

Eric668 I have the same code in my truck I found it with mt Palm Pilot Quick Check.

My book has this information

That's all I have on it.

I will be watching to see if anyone can add to it.
