Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Check Engine Light

While "feather footin" down I-5 my check engine light came on. My truck is a Calif. 98 12 valve with a Banks power pack, Stans 4" exhaust, Cat removed. Any members out there had this same problem and can point me in the right direction. Truck runs fine, but I've noticed the EGR is cold.

run a test and see which code has been set. the test is in the service manual. key on and off 3 times i think.

Unfortunately '98 and '99s don't respond to the key trick, you need a code reader. Is the light staying on? If the light doesn't come back on I wouldn't worry about it.

the 98 california truck's check engine light goes on when u pull the egr off or when it doesn't work. New question, how do u get the light to go out on the 98's with out killing the light? thanx Reb

Reb I'll bet the service manual tells how to check if the egr probe is functioning correctly. Read up on the tests to figure out how to trick it into thinking a working egr is there. It might be as simple as shorting the probe wires directly together or with the appropriate resistor in-between. Service manual probably lists the resistances for a correctly functioning probe.

Light is on, bought the OBT 2 reader and came up with code P0401 EGR Flow insufficent. Checked vacuum on EGR - ok, checked out the intake air temp. sensor- ok. Getting good vacuum but can't get anything thru the egr valve vacuum regulator solonoid. Book says at idle the EGR should be open but it's not.

Any ideas? How about removing the darn thing?
