Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Bad Lift Pump? Or Bad VP44?

Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Lift Pump Issues

My 1998. 5 24V has been turning on the check engine light and setting a P0216 code. My code book says thats an injection timing control circuit malfunction. I've cleared the code about ten times and I will drive for a couple weeks and it will come back on. There seems to be no rhime or reason to when it will illuminate. Truck runs great and gets the same fuel economy as always. Twice it has stored a companion code of P1693. My code book says that's a chrysler specific code for,"A companion DTC was set in both the PCM and ECM". Anybody have an idea as to what might be going on. Lift pump pressure is good and the VP44 has 50K on it, the truck has 185K.

You can try cleaning the connections to the MAP sensor, and maybe even pull it and clean it. May as well do the IAT while your in there. Chances are pretty good that your VP is on the way out.

The P0216 code is set when the Fuel Pump Control Module commands the VP44 timing solenoid to advance the timing and the Angle of Rotation Sensor inside the pump cannot adjust the timing correctly. The timing is advanced by the solenoid increasing the fuel pressure to the timing mechanism. If the fuel pressure inside the VP44 is low, this will cause the code. Two possibilities are a weak lift pump and/or a clogged fuel filter causing a fuel restriction to the VP44. If you have a gauge to measure fuel pressure, be sure it is always a positive pressure. If there is a vacuum at the inlet to the VP44, that could cause the problem.

The only other reason for the timing code is due to a damaged VP44 where internal parts of the pump are not moving freely causing the error.

Good luck.

Had the 1693 in mine two weeks ago. I had a erratic tach along with a stumble in the engine. It was a Crankshaft Position Sensor

that is located under the starter in the engine block. Replaced the

Map Sensor at 96k. The engine spit up in the Air Box when that happened. My K&N was wet with oil mist as was the air box. It was like the turbo was running in reverse.
