Fairly new member with a 98. 5 24 valve and 290k mile that I have put on it. I installed a older EZ Comp this past weekend but I did not connect the hot wire on the VP-44. When I drove it to check out my new thrill the check engine light came on after about 20 minutes. Does anyone know how to shut it off. My truck has never been to a dealer since I bought it new. Don't want to start a bad habit if I can help it.

If it was a temporary/inactive code the light should go out after 3 complete key cycles. The code will still be there the light will go out is all. If the code is active you will have to repair problem before the light will go out. Double check all your connections to make sure they are good and get the code so you can look it up and see what you are dealing with, you can go to any service shop with OBDII scanner and they should be able to read and clear the code.

Good Luck

I wonder if you set an overboost code from the extra fuel. May need a boost fooler if the Comp box doesn't have one in it.

many have run their truck with the check engine light always on--I'm one of them---codes are set from any myriad of things and they are all minor and usually don't affect the truck's performance-on the earlier models it seems to be more prevalent for the lights to come on and stay on-if the truck runs fine I wouldn't worry about it, but next time you get time have it checked like csevers said---chris
