Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Check for codes with ignition?

I feel like I am the last one to find out about something here. I was told the other day that you can turn your ignition on and off and have the Check Engine light flash and tell you the code that has been set. The guy that told me though didn't know exactly how to do it. Could someone please tell me the right way to do it? Thanks

Turn the ignition on, then off, then on, then off, then on. Watch the odometer window - the codes will display there as the diagnostic is run.
