The wife's 98 has a problem where the "check engine" light comes on intermittenly. Now at the same time I have noticed a loud ticking sound coming from the front of the engine. It's not the same sound we get from the fuel line. A lot more pronounced. I'm having a hard time getting outside to check it cause of the constant rain. I don't have a shop. Shade tree mechanic I am. I can hunt down the ticking but what is the gauge light mean? What gauge?

the check gauge light is suppose to light when one of your gauges is reading a out of spec. reading, IE: no or low oil pressure. If all your gauges are reading good readings when the light comes on, i never heard of that, i would suspect something up with the PCM. the check engine light means that the ECM or PCM has detected a error in some system of the truck, if its a PCM code that is generated you can cycle the key on and off about 3 or 4 times and the codes will be read from the odometer window. if its a ecm error code you will have to pay the dealer to pull the codes.

Beware! a loose kdp pin makes a loud clicking noise as it jumps around on the gears before it cracks the case. 12 or 24 valve '98 it doesn't matter, both are susceptible. If the noise seems to be coming from behind the fan don't run it till you pull the front cover to see what's going on.

On your '98 the key off/on trick doesn't work, you'll have to take it somewhere to get read.
