Believe it or not, there's other news being made in the auto industry besides what's coming out of Switzerland. Sterling Truck Corporation took the wraps off of its Bullet class 4/5 medium duty chassis cab today at the National Truck Equipment Association Work Truck Show in Indianapolis, for example. Not surprisingly, we decided to skip this show, but the hard working folks at Pickuptruck.com already have an article up on the new truck. Based on the recently unveiled Ram 4500/5500, the Sterling Bullet (great name) shares its looks with the recently unveiled Ram 4500/5500, but gets it own options and configurations to differentiate it from Dodge's heavy-duty truck. Though they're built on the same platform, and at the same plant for that matter, you can only buy a Bullet from a genuine Sterling truck dealer. One nifty feature it has that the Ram lacks is a Power Takeoff Package that allows the 6. 7L Cummins Turbo Diesel to act as a generator and power auxiliary equipment.

Pickuptruck.com reports the other advantage in buying a Sterling might be its dedicated service network that's open longer hours than your typical Dodge dealer. Pretty much everything else the Bullet and Ram share, like powertrain and transmissions, as well as convenience options like cruise control, power trailer tow mirrors and even a navigation system. These big work brutes should be available from Sterling by this fall. In lieu of a press release, you can click the Read link to get the nitty gritty details on the Bullet from Pickuptruck.com

I also forgot to Add that the DODGE Dealers - are upset over this.....

Dodge Dealers Would Prefer to Dodge This Bullet

By Bill Senefsky

Some Dodge dealers worry they may be competing against what they see as a rebadged Dodge Ram 4500 truck introduced by a corporate cousin, Sterling Truck Corp.

They say that, despite a credible styling job, the Bullet's profile similarity to the Ram 4500 is striking.

Sterling, a subsidiary of Freightliner LLC, which, like Chrysler Group's Dodge Div. , is part of DaimlerChrysler AG, debuted its new chassis-cab Sterling Bullet at a March truck show in Indianapolis. It will be available at select Sterling dealerships in late fall. The new truck expands Sterling's lineup into Class 4 and 5 trucks.

“We gave this truck the tagline ‘Nothing Stops the Bullet' because there isn't an application this truck can't tackle,” says Matthew Stevenson, Sterling's director of light commercial vehicles.

But Dodge dealers say they are struck by the Bullet's similarity to the Ram 4500, including a Cummins 6. 7L diesel engine under the hood. They say Sterling, by trying to expand its market presence, has taken the competition in house.

Freightliner President and CEO Chris Patterson says the Bullet and the redone '08 Ram 4500/5500 chassis cab, introduced at February's Chicago auto show, result from a Sterling-Dodge collaboration, and “together represent the best of the commercial vehicle and automotive worlds. ”

Some Dodge dealers, who decline to be identified, say it appears DaimlerChrysler is either ratcheting up its North American truck presence or attempting to follow General Motors Corp. model of offering companion truck lineups like Chevrolet's and GMC's.

Chrysler Group's dealer relations were strained last year when dealers complained that the company forced excess inventory on them. Then came news in February that DaimlerChrysler is putting the Chrysler Group up for sale. Now this, say Dodge dealers who sell Class 4 Rams.

One veteran Dodge dealer says of the upcoming Bullet: “We didn't want or expect it. ”

well i was looking at the bullet on the sterling website. When dodge first announces a comercial 4500/5500 series truck my first thoughts were how can dodge dealerships possibly keep a commercial customer happy with the service end of things. I cant stand my dealership for my personal truck never mind if i had to bring a company truck there for service. So i had been looking at ford 550s for the chassis of our company service truck and was happy to see the dodge 5500 as an option. I will pass on the dodge due to their service (or lack of) network. Now that sterling will market and service these i will most likely go with the sterling. Service sells.
