People who don't take pride in a caliber truck such as a Cummins should be shot. You pay good money for these things, but don't pay $10. 00 dollars for a damn fuel filter. I'd hate to have seen the oil... .

oh no, I thought you were suppost to re-use those! :-laf  JK everyone... ... ..... thats pretty bad. I change mine every other oil change!

I agree, public lynchings should be re-enacted for people who abuse such great vehicles. I was disgusted with myself after seeing mine with 10,000 miles, I do mine every oil change now, that's just wrong.

Pulled this fuel filter out of a truck that came in for maintenance.

Yuk!

How many miles on that filter. Did it also have a lot of black crud in the bottom of the canister. I usually change mine every 10K.

I have changed my filter twice in 5000 miles, and they both were very dark in color like that.

What color should it be?

All I can say, is most of you guys have either never changed your own fuel filters, or else lead charmed lives, cuz MOST fuel filters on our trucks changed at recommended intervals pretty much look that way... ;)

Gary the reason I ask about mileage was my very first change at 10K the fuel filter was as black as coal, similar to the one pictured. The last two I changed at 20K and at 30K sure did not look as nasty as the first one at 10K.

Manual recommends 15K change intervals on mine, but every other oil change I like to change the fuel filter. Usually about once a year or a little before. :)

I would imagine that the source of your fuel - and maybe the brand - would have a lot of influence on the condition of your old filter. Also, many owners are unaware that fuel actually passes THRU the lift pump motor in operation, picking up wear particles from bushings, as well as particles from the motor's brushes. It sorta stands to reason that wearing in of a NEW motor will create more of those particles than a fully broken in one, thus more contamination to the filter element in early truck/engine miles. That's one reason I have added a Frantz sub-micron filter after the LP and ahead of the stock fuel filter...

That fellow had a heavy dose of "asphaltene"! Some nasty looking stuff! Tell us where he gets his fuel so we don't get it there! How many miles did he leave it in for?

Really, I don't want any fuel from there. I only get mine from Shell or truck stops.

My filter was kinda dark when i changed it the first time, and there is no telling when it was changed before that but it looked nothing like that one.

That's nasty.

Now remember the fuel flow through the filter was a little "restricted" and imagine what the VP44 was thinking (I'm starving over here!) and how much "cooling" fuel was getting to the VP44.

The ff is $12 the VP is $1800.

FWIT fp on EACH side of the ff SHOULD have made this pretty obvious.

That's where having a pusher pump in series with the stock LP pays off - but of course, lotsa pumps and PSI is NO substitute for CLEAN filters! ;) :D

That filter is as black as can be. I change my own filter every other oil change (which turns out to be every 10k mi), and it's really really dark, but not completely black and cruddy looking.
