A four cylinder diesel making 185 hp in the early 60's? My 97 only had 180.

The barely over 1 mpg rating seems about right though.

The 4-71 Jimmy is big, but due to the two stroke design it only has 284 cubic inches. Since it is a two stroke, in theory it is comparable to a 4-stroke 568 ci.

Back in the day, they were like Cummins is today, they were in everything. They were very unique and in ways simple. They could configure as a right hand rotation or left hand, a lot of parts would interchange between the inline and V engines in the same series. The overhead "rack" adjustment was complicated, you had to follow the book or you would get a poor running engine, unless you had a really good memory.

The injectors are amazing and were used in all the series depending on HP. There were only a handful, unlike Cummins. They were rocker arm actuated, this part of the injector adjustment was easy, each size injector used a special tool (a pic). The hard part of the adjustment was the built in fuel management within the injector. It was mechanical and attached via linkage to the governor, called (a rack). When a mechanic/owner operator would tell me he needed to "run the rack" on his 855 Cummins, I would be like, no, you need to do the overhead.:D
