This may be a newby-type question, but I am replaceing the LP tonight on my 1998. 5 3500 4wd. When I took out the banjo bolts, one of them had what looks like a ball-bearing that might be used in a ball-type check valve, but I cannot see any surface that it would seat against. The manual does not reference a check valve (as far as I have noticed). Am I missing something or did someone "modify" the original setup. I only got the truck 3 months ago and am changing the lift pump becuase of hard starts, fear of ruining the VP44, and many people say I should carry a spare regardless.

Any comments?

Jeez! No comments?

First of all, welcome to the TDR. Lift pumps are a constant focus of comment.

It sounds like the check ball from the internal pressure regulator in the lift pump has escaped. It normally sits in a bore within the pump and it shouldn't be where you found it. If you disassemble the old lift pump, you will see where it should be.

It's a good thing you found it.

A spare is a good idea, as are gauges.

Indeed, the way you describe it, it could easily block off fuel flow in operation, and create MAJOR problems!

Tom is right - sounds like the normally spring loaded pressure control valve has disintegrated, allowing the check valve ball to float free...
