wish i had noticed this happening sooner:eek:

the trans lines on my 94 had metal retaining clips . rust formed under them and the lines finally blew. not sure what year they were switched but my 01 has plastic clips.

i had to buy all 3 tubes and the lines have been changed to what is on my 01 . because of the revised lines being shorter i had to buy the rubber hose's with quick connects to reach the cooler.

i also had to buy line adapter fittings because the new lines are larger where they are attached to the trans case.

see some pics of the damaged lines here

I have the black plastic transmission cooler line retention clips on my '98. 5. However, DO NOT be fooled into a false sense of security! Even the plastic clips (especially the "floating" clips that connect the two lines together but do not anchor to anything), will chafe through the metal cooler lines if left unchecked.

The solution to this is to keep the metal cooler lines clean and periodically adjust (i. e. , slide) the "floating" clamps to a slightly different location.

Tech at trany shop showed me 4 places they see troubles on the steel cooler lines.

On 12 valves, the plastic crankcase breather tube will wear through a steel cooler line, too. On mine the line was smooth but not wore. The plastic tube didn't show any sign. Yeah, the cut off breather is now rust proofing the bottom side of everything behind it, but it beats getting stranded with a ham strung trany. I'll look at rerouting the breather tube sometime this summer.

Tell me about it!

I am in the middle of that very thing as we speak. I bought all five trans lines and it cost me $303. 37. The lines I bought are NOT equiped for the quick connect ends on the trans. or the heat exchanger under the Exhaust manifold. Apparently the updated lines come with flared and threaed ends. You need to get new brass couplings to thread into the trans and the heat exchanger to accept the new lines. The only quick connectinns are on the two rubber lines that go to the cooler on the front of the truck. These are metal connectors. I got two of the fittings ,the ones for the heat exchanger, at LOWES. The other two are going to have to from DC I am afraid. I am supposed to have them tomorrow and I will see if they are the correct ones. The parts dud, I mean dude, I thought should have know LAST WEEK when I ordered the new lines that they were UPDATED lines and need new couplings for the connections. Well maybe not, Mine is probably the only truck that this has ever happened too. Other than the connections the lines when layed side by side for comparison are identicle. Hope I get the correct connections> My baby has been Idle for over a week and I am starting to have withdraw.
