Check Your Wiring!!!!

I changed shocks this afternoon and discovered a potential disaster. The left front shock rod has worn through the wiring harness coming out of the under-hood fuse box. The wiring is clipped to the fender in such a way that it sits right on top of the shock rod. I have 80 K on my truck and the protective covering is completly worn through and the service wires are now rubbing on the rod. If this rubs through it would at the least blow the fuses and could fry the entire harness. I recomend everyone check thier routing.

Great Tip!

That's exactly why I installed a plastic cap on top of each threaded shock rod (upper mount, front shocks) when I added my Edelbrock IAS shocks two months after I purchased my Ram. Anytime I'm working on my Ram I look for potential factory oversights and correct them... believe me, I've found many.

I have a buddy that has a 98 1/2 - this did happen to him. 11 trips to the dealer later, they found the wires rubbed through. At first, he would lose his speedo, CC and the ABS light would come on. This went on for a while. Then, one day, he was out in the middle of nowhere (typical luck), and the truck just died. Wouldn't restart. Spent about an hour looking for the problem and was about ready to start walking, but just happened to try to start it again. It started. By the way, he filed for arbitration after about 8 trips to the dealer. His hearing was after it was fixed, but they still gave him a free 100K bumper-to-bumper warranty.

I checked mine today, and your right, it was rubbing through, it was totally through the plastic loom, and i only have 18k miles. I Ty-wrapped the harness away from the bolt and re taped it. This is no joke,i can see this being a major problem for people.

While you're at it...

Check the ground cable on the passenger side battery. I saw that mine was rubbing on one of the shock bracket mounting studs. A friend's '95 was also rubbing.

Thanks for the info. We've got a 96 that has the ABS light on and the Guages are up and down like crazy. Will get one of the boys to get under it tomorrow and check it out. I'll also check mine out as well.
