Well, after 3000 miles, I checked my new K&N filter today for leaks etc. I know I installed it per instructions. I have been worried since i kept reading posts about good bad etc.

Low and behold, I found several areas around the edge of the filter where I could clearly see dirt was passing thru un-filtered.

So much for the whistle of the turbo. . Bye bye K&N, hello stock paper.

I'll trade you even up for my paper filter that I took out to install my K&N 85K ago!

I'm serious about this. Page me at 800-206-1523 Houston Time.

I changed mine from the stock box to the RE-0880. I didn't like the way the filter fit in the stock air box. The RE-0880 has an excellent seal to it. My oil analysis have always come back clean so I'm sticking with the K&N. Now if I can just get the nerve up to hack up the cowl on the truck for the Psychotty.

I have a good friend with a 99 CTD ran and he has never run nothing but a Mopar filter. About 2 weeks ago we went to put my OE K&N(I have a Psychotty) in place of the Mopar A/F. There was all sorts of dirt on the sealing passage on the exhaust side of the lower A/f housing and the turbo was blacken blades bad. His OE housing is worped on that side we ended up putting my old lower housing and ordering him a
RE-0880. I believe the OE housing is the biggest problem with opur trucks.

I just serviced the K&N O. E. style filter on my Cummins and after 1 year of service it passed the "white glove" test. Not even the slightest trace of dust to be found downstream of the K&N.

I side with Drawson with regards to the housing being the real source of the problem. Some years of the PowerJokes had the same problem with distorted filter housings.

The "AMSOIL" filter fits well enough that it wouldn't matter if it is bowed a little, it would still seal it up.

Bug Out,
This is the RE-0880 installed on my truck. The red foam is a prefilter.

Get ready for a bunch more in-cab noise with the RE-0880. #ad
If I had a problem with high pitched whine type noises, it'd have to go.

Let me guess when you installed the K&N you failed to put the grease on the sealing gasket. ----------I'm now on line ordering a Cummins re-con eng. 700k++++++++++

When running my RE-0880 before getting the Psychotty housing, I was disapointed about the lack of noise. I had used a hole saw on my OE housing prior to getting the RE-0880 and the noise level didn't change. When I drilled the 4 1/2" hole in the cowl the noise did increase. I put back in my silencer ring.

To install eht Re-0880 properly you need to get a 4" piece of PVC or exhaust pipe about 2" long to clamp between the hoes and the air filter. The RE-0880 is the K&N air filter number I got mine a Checker auto parts they had to order it.

Already lost it Dan. The batteries in my old truck went south while I was trying to sell it so I bought some new Die-hards for the new truck and put those cheapos in the 94 before I sold it. Thanks for caring though #ad
.

BTW, I ordered my RE-0880 from Summit racing for $52. 00 to my front door.

I have used K&N for years in all my vehicles and motorcycles and no problems. I clean the one in the Ram about every 3 month as I do a lot of driving.

Now along comes this RE-0880, do tell me is it truly better, if it is still a K&N what am I gaining?

Must I cut a hole to use it correctly?
Questions questions and more ?. Feel free to Email me, but if I am to buy another filter why not the Cummins or Dodge stock paper and be done with it?

Convince me all you knowledgeable mechanics.

To tell you the truth, I put in the psychotty air induction kit and I can say that I feel an increase in the "seat of the pants" acceleration. Sounds like a 747 at full thrust under wide open throttle. Before that I had a stock replacement K&N in the truck for 70K miles and had no problems with it whatsoever. As far as filtration goes, Cummins states that the K&N filter does not meet their standards for particle filtration. In addition, neither does the Fleetguard filter, nor the OEM Mopar one. I'll stick with the K&N and keep it properly oiled for a long and happy service life.
tdrmbramr - I just have to know what in heaven's name happened to your engine? We're a Cummins B&C Dealer and Authorized Service shop and I've done quite a few overhauls on these engines, but none from an air filtration problem.

Chris, what I've found with the Pyshcotty is that it decreases your EGTs,mainly when towing, not something you normaly feel from the seat of your pants.

I have been e-mailing K&N and a fellow there has been kind enough to return mail. He suggest even MORE grease around the seal. .

So, I am going to re-try the filter here shortly. **** , I miss the whistle! I picked up my trailer and and no whine, whistle or nothing... .

So, this time I'll put on more grease then a liberal would, and do my best to get a good seal...

I'll keep all posted on progress.

I must say, the RE-0880 looks intriguing... And certainly "seal" proof. . A little more info and I might have to call Summit. #ad

What kind of info are you looking for. How about this: With the RE-0880 you can REALLY hear the turbo whine. It was loud enough I put the silencer ring back in.

How much does it lower the EGT's when towing on average?

Is there a noticable difference in power from the stock K&N to the 0880?

Any noticable fuel mileage change?

I love the whistle/whine of the turbo, but I'll leave the ring on. .

My next ad on will be gauges, before I do any actual engine stuff, after 100,000 and warranty is gone.
