Checked your RV battery cables lately?

This is one of the batteries out of my Fox Mountain 5th wheel, built by Northwood. A lot of Northwood products have metal frames for their batteries, so if yours are stacked you might want to give then a look see. The 40 amp battery fuse in the camper saved the wiring in the RV, the 40 amp fuse under the hood saved my truck. Only dumb luck kept the battery from exploding.

Roger that. Just replaced dealer delivery (2) group 24 batteries with Group 31. Group 31 is the largest footprint 12 clot battery that will fit in those trays. I considered 6v Trojans, but the height gave little vertical clearance on the battery stack.
And yes, you gotta make sure the cables are routed with clearance.

The front of the battery bay has positive and negative bus connections. Really sloppily done at the factory. I’ve found a lot of shoddy assembly on my 235RLS. Disappointing.

It appears that it didn't only melt the post out of that battery, it also ruined the other. The red plastic cap on the unused post is melted to it. Also, the drive from Grants, NM to here which included an overnight stop with hook-ups didn't charge it. I have it on a charger in "repair" mode but I don't hold out much hope.

Good point. I check mine monthly while checking water level. Mine stay plugged in all the time in my shop.

Cheers, Ron

I don't have any batteries that require checking the water, but I'll include battery checks into my daily trip insp.

Very similar to what happened to my dump trailer. The nut was only on the stud a few threads so it arced until it finally melted the stud clear off the battery. The heat generated, even melted some of the insulation on the small adjoining wires. I was blaming the controller for the intermittent operation....the battery was okay so I used a post-stud adapter, then added a second battery.

I measured the voltage on the undamaged post and it was nearly 12, the melted one was about 7. I don't know if I'm comfortable with plugging the hole from the melted stud removal and using the battery.

My 2018 Silver Fox has been one dissapointment after another. My crappy Wildcat was built better as was every other RV I've owned over 30+ years.
I will never buy another Northwood product.

I've owned three other 5th wheels in the last 25 years and towed just about every brand that is made, plus most of the brands that have gone out of business. I'm more than happy with the Northwood. NO LIPPERT FRAME!!!

Why this, please explain, to my knowledge the Nothwoods are at the upper End in Price and Quality and i considered them for Me when the Time comes.

Someone please correct me if I am wrong, but I believe that Northwood got bought up by a larger RV manufacturer somewhere around 2017 that then decided to "streamline" production and profits, thus resulting in a substantially lower build quality then they were previously committed to.

If you are seriously looking for an RV, I might suggest keeping an eye out for a pre 2017 Northwood model.

I don't think so. I know they bought the facility in La Grande that used to produce Fleetwood RVs and started the Outdoors RV brand. They still build their own frames, the major selling point in our decision.

They are indeed at the upper end and have a good reputation. Sadly, they're just mediocre when it comes to quality. My unit was just thrown together. Someone pointed out to me that things changed greatly during the recession and even good builders began cutting costs to the bone.
I've owned a number of RV's over the last 30+ years and I have a background in manufacturing. I'm also an avid DIY'r So I consider myself a pretty good judge.
It's clear to me that NW just don't care what they're doing.

Little stuff:
Most cabinet screws were stripped so latches and hinges fell apart. I installed new screws.
All doors and drawers were crooked/out of plumb. I rehung all of them.
All faucets were loose. Drains had sealant slopped all over.
The two fiberglass end caps have countless blemishes. Factory said all their units are like that. They rubbed them out but they still look like crap. I don't see the same thing with any other brand.
The slide out awnings are an ultra cheap version that is only available to the builders. Carefree wont sell the same junk model to the public and no parts are avail. The light and heat comes right through them and the rain collapses them and bends the tubes. I wish I had just installed covers myself like I did on my other trailer.
Main awning (electric) was mounted with awning arms badly out of plumb so the awning clanks and jerks and has to be helped to nest when retracting.
Here's an example of the wiring for it:

There was interior trim with big gaps and some even falling off. Factory fixed some, I fixed the rest.
They claim to do some big electrical test before shipping but it had USB charge ports wired backwards which blew fuses - and they left them that way. I figured it out and corrected them.

Big stuff:
Main slideout was installed wrong and ended up ripping its roof. (post warranty period so my problem)
There were numerous cracks in the exterior from rough treatment in the factory and running screws through the walls to the outside (just stupid). NW paid to have them "fixed" but the results are dissapointing. New cracks keep showing up.
Damage where wall had been set on something prior to assembly, cracking it.

The roof wasn't structured correctly for second AC (an option I paid for). Unit had to go back to factory for a rebuild and replacement of the roof. Roof was replaced IN ONE DAY!!! Quality of work is horrendous. I'm lucky I can keep it inside because I cannot trust the roof and have to inspect it often. I was lied to time after time by the factory. They told me what ever I wanted to hear but didn't do anything they promised. The factory also tried to argue with me on what I paid for - a ridiculous argument. My dealer set them straight.
Fridge was installed without any regard to the instructions. All clearances were way off and it worked very poorly. I reworked it myself and it functions OK now.
Now the main slide is grinding into the carpet. Warranty expired so it's my problem.
There's lots more little stuff. It's way worse than I ever experienced before.

You do get lots of little extra's with an Arctic Fox but the build quality is terrible. It compares with Jayco, Keystone, Pioneer - very avg. to below avg. from what I've seen at RV shows. And not nearly as good as my 2004 Wildcat which was a low end brand.

Boah, that is really a bad Quality, thats definitely not something i would pay money for.
What Brand would you (now - today) call a good, of course pricy, quality?
I'm just curious.

I know MWilson had a bad electrical malfunction at the Cummins rally over the weekend.

My electrical malfunction was on the 120 volt side, loose / bad connection in the junction box where the cord connects to the hardwiring of the trailer. Loose wire nut right from day one I would say....

Made enough heat finally to ground the black wire out against the steel junction box when the insulation melted off...not good..

These laid on the picnic table overnight, so they were not green when in the junction box..

That's a tough one. If I were in the market I would check out Grand Design, although I noticed they take some cheasy shortcuts like no pad under the carpet. I would also look at Montana and maybe Couger.

MY BAD....A little more thorough research on my part shows me that I was thinking about Thor Industries buying Heartland RV in 2010.

2010 and early Heartland RV's are definitely a step up in quality then later models, but I really don't know what is going on with Northwoods quality control...sorry for the confusion!!!
