Checking codes

Are the only ways you can check codes by plugging a diagnostic tool in or taking it to the dealer? I remember reading somewhere where the code shows up on the mileage window? And how would you go about clearing them, or is that dealer only stuff. Thanks for any input.

Put your key in the ignition switch. Turn it from off to on leaving it in the on position on the third time. The codes will show up in the odometer. Then all you do is loo the code up in the FAQ section in the top of the 3rd gen forum.
