Guys,

Big Don here. Just thought I'd check in with yall. I found a good deal on an '00 quad cab shortbed 4x4 6 speed, 3. 54 gears w/30,000miles. I don't like the problems with some of the 24 valve trucks, but I bought this one. I also sold my 85 crewcab to my neighbor, but he wants us to install a cummins in it for him in the spring.

I drove 'Ol BLue to pickup the new truck in Princeton WV. It was about two hours drive for me and dad. The owner drove the truck from Huntington, WV to meet us at the Cracker Barrel in Princeton. WE ate and looked the truck over, then I drove it down the road and back and bought it in the parking lot ( SO I would have to recommend Cracker Barrel as the best place to buy a truck, got good food too). Of Course, dad had to drive the new truck home, but that's okay, cause I still like 'Ol BLue.

Anyway that was on Dec 8th and I had to go to a Christmas party for work in Greeneville, TN. I drove 'Ol Blue to the party, but noticed as I got close to the party that the headlights were getting dim and the wipers were dragging. I dropped my date at the door and parked. When I came out that night 'Ol Blue wouldn't turn over. No big deal it's a diesel and it will run with very low battery voltage. I rolled her off and she fired and ran fine. As I came thru the parking lot to pickup my girl, a gentleman reminded that I might want to turn on my headlights. They are on I replied. I got out to look and they were barely burning.

So... ... my truck would run, but it was midnight and I had no lights. I shut the truck off and went inside. My date kinda lowered her head. When I asked what was wrong she said very shyly... "are you all right?" I asked why and she said "Well, I know how much you like your truck and something's wrong with it isn't it?" No big deal we rna to Walmart and got the biggest marine battery they had and we were ready to go. The next day I took her and had the alternator rebuilt. Lasted 185,000 miles, so I figure that ain't too bad.

It did seem kinda ironic that 'Ol Blue would throw a fit the same day the new truck came home. I told 'Ol Blue not to worry that she would always be "the truck" and the '00 would be known as my "other truck".

I tried driving the '00 for a day or two, but couldn't stand it. It was entierly too slow so to make it somewhat acceptable I have installed a power edge EZ and I have a gage setup, injectors and a 4" exhuast waiting to be installed. I just can't get over how much power 'Ol Blue has when compared to a new stock truck.

I still drive 'Ol Blue most of the time. I like the bench seat in 'Ol BLue better, so does my girl, says in the new truck she can't sit next to me. She asked me when I was gonna have the new truck making noise and blowing black smoke. I told her as soon as all the parts arrived. Too bad I couldn't get the '00 with a bench seat (haha).

We will continue to cater to the first gen crowd, but now we may start testing some newer products for the 24 valve trucks. I still like the power and simplicity of the older trucks, but don't hurt to try something new every now and then

later

Don,

Sounds like you have found yourself a nice truck. Good luck. I've seen those 24-vavles on the dyno. Doesn't take too much tinkering to get some serious power.

Hey Big Don...

Good luck with your 24 valve electronic truck.

You Dog you!

Why not a 12 valve mechanical unit???

anyway... best of luck on your new "unit".

Frank...

1st Gen at heart... 2nd Gen because of the P pump and 12 valves!

I woulda bought a 12 valve truck in a heartbeat. I've looked for an early 98. 5 with quad cab and 12 valve, but could not find one. I am still not a big fan of the 24v but it will have to do.

thanks

Don
