OK my ignorance is showing here. I decided to check the transmission oil on my 6 speed and found that I have no tool to remove the oil level plug. Can anyone tell me what size and what the name is of the tool that is required to remove this plug so I can buy one?

I just stuck in a bolt with a 5/8" (I think)head part way. Put a wrench on the part sticking out and break her loose. I'm just too cheap or lazy to buy the right tool. :p

I think that it is a 17mm allen/hex. What are you going to check? If you want an oil analysis to take a look remove one of the PTO cover bolts, I think they are like 10mm or something. Otherwise I think that you can't check anything from the fill plug.

Thanks guys, problem solved. I can't believe how I can spend 2 hours doing a 5 minute job. I tried a 5/8 bolt with2 nuts jammed on it but could not break it loose. The torque spec is only 22 lbs but it was really tight. Finally went to town and bought a 17mm allen/socket and thanks "InThinAir" that is the correct size. I just wanted to check the oil level as the truck only has 2K on it but I am leaving for Alaska in a couple of days. The fluid level was perfect. Thanks again for the help.

Heh, I used a trashed bolt and put a mini pipe wrench right on the threads. Double nutting it would have been too technical for me. :D
