After installing a new battery 1 month ago on a 2001 Impala,my wife tells me the ''security''message appeared on the dash warning panel. We did not think too much of it until Friday when she could not start the car at lunchtime. I advised her of the usual stuff--check that the map light is not on to drain the battery--and common sense things like that. I told her to try the start routine again after letting it set for a few hours. It started after she wiggled and jiggled the transmission lever.

Yesterday we went to a track meet 150 miles from home, and after setting for only a half hour, the no-start happened. After I tried to wiggle and jiggle the [floor mounted shifter] ,again no start. She mentioned something about the brake pedal,so I pumped up the brakes till I had hard pedal, and held the pedal down --she cranked right up.

I think my next action will be to either disconnect the battery and mabe the codes will clear,or I wonder if Mr Goodwrench should scan the codes and find a reason for this. I will mention that the first battery was in a nearly dead condition and all kinds of crazy things were flashing on the dash before I put in the new battery.

Comments and advice appreciated.

We had symptoms with a Saturn and it's dying battery years ago also. Disconnecting the new battery for a while helped with some, but not all the problems. Had to have the dealer reset it with their computer. It was a 5 speed, but it had some no start issues as well. good luck.

Thank you, TCP. I guess it will not hurt to do the disconnect thing first, but I probably will at least call the dealer first.
