came across this on e-bay

It's not a Cummins BUT..............

I have a 1984 GMC 1ton pickup sitting around because it is too expensive to drive. it has a 454 backed y a turbo400. i want to put a 4bt in it but have some questions about it first. first off, i live in arizona. they smog our 6. 2 litre diesel truck and kind of strict about it. so is there an exemption tag on the frito lays truck that started out as a 350? if it doesnt well im outta luck. question number two - is the cummins taller in the back than a 454? ive never done this style conversion before. i know that the 4bt should bolt to the 400, but i dont want to have to move the firewall back because of the height of the motor or move all of the drivetrain up and make new motor mount holes. and my last question is when the motor is bolted in using the mounts outta the frito truck, will i have to move the transmission and transfercase forward. if anybody has played with this and not done too much modification, could you fill me in that would be great. thanx.

It looks as though you already have a 12v in a Chevy, correct? Just use it for measurements. The 4B will have the same dimentions aside from being 2 cyls shorter.

and while im on the suject is there someplace near arizona i can auctually get a full running truck? i just want this to go a smooth as possible. itll hopefully be a little more practical than the 7 speed in our other 5. 9ctd

on the other truck the firewall had to be moved back 4-6 inches. the intercooler was baraly wedged between the radiator and the grille. it has a custom made engine mounts and a dumptruck transmission. every thing was moved around and i rather not go that route. it looks good and runs like a bat. . well you can understand. its just everything is wedged in that motor

Cummins in Chevy

I put a 12V 5. 9TD in my '93 Chevy 1 ton, 4x4 5 speed. If you go 5 speed, go with a Dodge setup, as they use a 12. 25" PP & flywheel and can be upgraded to 13". The Chevy uses 12" flat face setup. Also the Dodge NV4500 has stronger input shaft.

That said, I used the 12" Chevy, and I have 300 HP injectors and it runs and pulls great. No clutch weakness.

I also have a early bronco with a 4BT and T-400 and 3:50 gears. Runs good, in current form no race horse, but gutsy and economical. Son really really wants it.

I've done extensive research on over-drive automatics and what can work behind the Cummins. Thinking of tackling the GM 4L80-E behind the 4BT.

My next conversion project is?

If you have a 2wd truck, the cummins mounts out of a P truck will bolt right in. It is a easy job. I just put a 4BTA in a 85 K20. I used the stock TH400. I got everything to do it from the Diesel Depot. On the 4wd trucks, you have to make new pads that the mounts sit on. Everything clears. I pulled out a 6. 2. This engine has more power and gets 25% better mileage. I did put a 3200 GS in it and I changed the 16cm housing out for a 12. She will make 24lbs of boost. With 4. 10 it will do 72mph.

ok here are the specifics... . 1 ton single cab longbed 4x4. current combo 454/th400/married205. . backed by a 14bolt and a d60 front axle. . im hopin that a 4bt just bolt right in without modificatioin to anything but with all the tools i have anything is possible and i have a nv4500 that we are going to sell to help fund this. . i would use it and sell the 2 th400s we have but we have more use for the 400s and there will have to be an adapter because like i said is is a married trans/tcase
