Chevy Military Diesel ... help??

But I have a chance on buying a 1985 Chevy M1008 Military Pick up.

It has a 6. 2 Detroit, Dana 60 front axel, GM 14 bolt rear, 3 spd auto with 37,000 miles. for $3K



Is it worth it? Can I get parts for the motor?



Would rather have a 12V but cant seem to find any in good shape and with in my budget#@$%!

This would probably be best in General Diesel Topics or Other Vehicles. But, let me give you a couple of comments while it's here.



The M1008 will have 4. 56 gears with a locker in the rear. If you are looking for a good hauler/woods truck, go for it. They have a hard time keeping up on the highway with such deep gears and no overdrive, so you may disappointed if you are looking for a daily driver. They have quite a following with the Ex-Military vehicle crowd, so parts, info forums and people who have a working knowledge of them are readily available. I'd buy one in a heartbeat for a firewood hauler if I could find one locally that was still solid.



For what it's worth, I had a non-military 1985 K-20 with a 6. 2L Diesel and a 4-speed before I purchased my 1992 Dodge. It was a miserable gutless pig of a truck, but held together for 331K of my abuse before it finally gave up.

try the steelsoldiers.com site. It is dedicated to miltary vehicles and probably has the largest data base of military vehicle data and knowledge. Like the TDR of miltary vehicles.

Memphis Equipment in Chambersburg PA sells that vehicle for $8500 with about 60K miles on them.

IMO there good for part's don't run it over 55 or you will sling part's everywhere

and if you really want one go to Govliq.com you can pick up running truck's for less then 2000. 00 very easy

I had a M1008 a few years ago. It ran well, but was underpowered. The 4. 56 gears helped make up for the lack of power. I had a 4" lift with 11. 00R16 Michelin XL tires on stock wheels. Tires measured about 37. 5" tall by 11" wide. I had converted the electrical system to 12v. These things really have a worse reputation than they deserve... but not too much worse. A manual glow plug controller is a great idea. 6. 2s don't start without a little glow unless they were just turned off. I wish I had kept that truck just like it was. However, I got carried away and installed 395/85R20 Michelin XMLs. I didn't like it and sold it. Now I wish I had it back just like it was with the 11. 00R16 tires.
