16 forward 14 reverse ...... now that's what we need

whats an 01 powerstroke worth?

It has something to do with the vibrations and torque from the Cummins Diesel. If you don't lug the engine and use 5th gear below 2000 rpms, you should be okay, I have 194,000 miles on my factory original 5th gear nut and trans.

I'm not a Chevy expert, but would the 4500 be used in a light duty gas truck? Perhaps it's a 3500, which Dodge used in their half-tons.

Long story on this truck and the POS that sold it to me - anyway, I have finally taken possession of it and am in the process of replacing the clutch. In looking at the still mounted, and very dirty transmission I can see an NP cast in the housing on the passenger side. What kind of trans is this? SomeData lists the possibility of 4:

• NV 3500 Transmission

• NV 4500 Transmission

• 5 Speed, Hydramatic (MG5/MY2/M50)

• 5 Speed, New Process (MW3)

They only have specs for the NV trannies. I found a post on wiki that talked about the MW3 being a predecessor to the NV3500 and according to a table on that site, the 2 weren't used in the same years.

Any thoughts? I'll have it out monday and can look for other #'s then.

NP is New Process which was bought out by NV, New Venture around 1993. So the tran's that is in your 1500 Chev should be a New Process.

According to Blumenthal's it is the NV 3500. Now I need an input shaft bearing retainer. They have new ones for $57. Anybody know where I might find a used one? I know the transmission would have to be scrapped in oreder to sell just that one thing, but you never know.

OK - NOW Blumenthal's says it is an NV 4500! I found another site here NV4500 Case Assembley Parts Diagram and Parts Listing and it says that this is correct. The input reatiner cast numbers on mine and the part # Eddy at Blumenthal's gave me match. They were out so he suggested 6-States Distributors out of SLC. We also have a 6 States here in Rock Springs so I called and they'll have it here tomorrow!

Anyway - I am back onto the 5th gear nut now. Should I worry about this at all with my stock 350 gasser?

FWIW - I have dealt with 6 States in Rock Springs before and they too have excellent service. I even had one of their techs show me all his tricks and tips for U-Joint installation. They are fast, friendly, and affordable. 3 great qualities for a company to have!

Be glad it's not a borg-warner. I had one in my chevy and wore it out lickity-split. At least you have workable material. All the nv's I've seen in chevys have been 4500s.

Well I couldn't wait any longer so for better or for worse I put picture 1 facing outward and picture 2 towards the motor. I now need to wait until morning and buy a new release fork pivot pin. Should I apply some grease to the transmission input shaft the way I did with the 5600? I didn't put alot but i did put some wheel bearing grease on it to help it slide on a littel easier. Some Data (all data) is helping me VERY little as far as this is concerned.

I would think the pilot bearing would install with the taper toward the input shaft for ease of install, but that is a guess. I don't use grease on the splines, that will just collect clutch dust and gum it up.
