Questions for those living in Wyoming,

Just gathering up info on the living in Wyoming... . specifically the Cheyenne area. Its been 10 years since I've been to Wy. and Im wondering how bad the sales and income taxes are, fuel prices, real estate... all that good stuff. LOL :) Im applying a job in Cheyenne with the UPRR, locomotive shops are getting few and far in between here in WI now.

If u dont want to post here... . PM or email me.

Thanks ahead of time for your help. :)

Jeff,

Ever been to Point Sporting Goods? My wife is from LaCrosse and I've spent a lot of time all over WI... great state! I'm not sure I can answer your question, but if I remember correctly, WY is a very favorable state when it comes to taxes. Here's a couple of links to check out:

http://www.cheyenneleads.org/html/business_friendly.htm

Or, do a search on Wyoming cost of living, Wyoming taxes, etc.

I think you'll find all the info you're looking for and more.

Good luck, -Ken

can't comment much on Cheyenne taxes, but WYO as a state has no income tax. Not bad eh? there are a couple guys from Chey town that will chime in.

good luck with your job app,

jason

EMD, check your PM's. :D

Don't worry about Whitmore. Cheyenne (population 50k) is way too big a town for his liking. He lives a safe 4 hours from here. I say safe cuz I think if he were closer, I'd be in trouble a lot more often. :D

Which job? Burnham Shop in Denver would be a better place for you to go size wise. Of course there is North Platte as well.

Are you applying for mechanic? Electrician? Trainservice?

KAT Diesel,

Im going after a Mechanic position right now. (actually its the apprenticeship position). I looked at getting into North Platte, but they dont have any apprenticeship postings right now.

I've got 2 years experience and 2 years training before that; but no journeyman's card, so I dont think I can just go right into a Mechanic/Electrician's position outright. Besides I wouldnt mind doing the apprenticeship... . I'd get a journeymans card out of it.

Of course there is always dispatching. :D but I dont want to put up with using the phones all the time... ... my hearing aids and phones sometimes don't get along too well. LOL

Trainservice has always been a goal of mine... . tried twice on two different railroads and didnt get into the position. I had a position on WC when I was there but CN merger plans axed the training class  . And i just tried Canadian Pacific recently, but didnt get selected for a physical. Ah well... . thats the fun part in life... . try and try again. :)

EMD, I suspect tpc has given you a lot of info, but if not, as mentioned, Wyo. has no state income tax. Sales tax in Cheyenne is 6%. Property taxes are very reasonable. For example on a $200+k house about $1000 per year. Fuel last weekend was $1. 43 for diesel. License plates/vehicle registration is expensive. New 03 CTD would pay about $700/yr. It declines as the vehicle gets older. Utilities are about the same as most other areas. Vehicle insurance is cheaper b/c of fewer people hence fewer accidents. Real estate prices are comparable to most other non-metropolitan areas. Good looking women are hard to find, but sweet sheep are plentiful!! Let us know if you're heading out this way. fwiw, I started my undergrad. at UW-Stevens Point. Finally as mentioned, Whitmore is about 4 hrs. away. Just kidding Kevin!

Yep, pretty much what I said. I just don't share with the whole world our little secret here. ;) I'm glad I brought my babe with me when I came here. But if one were looking, one could be found. :D
