Fellow Rammers:

I just turned 90K miles on my 02 and the transmission was hard shifting and occassionally did not want to go into 1st or 3rd. I bought some Penzoil Synchromesh and changed the fluid. The difference is night and day; the transmission shift very smoothly now.

Interesting, seems like on my truck I need to change it around 35 to 40k miles. The first time I changed it around 40K miles w/ Royal Purple, which didn't do a lot of good. My transfer case burned up at 69. 9K miles, just under the wire for ext warranty. While at DC, they checked the transmission fluid, thought is was burnt 'cause of the purplish color and changed it back to factory fluid. I'm glad they did. The factory stuff works best, in my truck anyway.

So, if your 6spd is shifting badly, you might want to consider changing to either Penzoil or Quaker Stated Synchromesh. Its approved for this transmission.

i just put in an order for amsoil for my transmission. cant wait to get it changed out so i can feel this difference everyone is talking about.

Out of all the fluids I have tried (OE, Pennzoil, Royal Purple, Redline, and Amsoil), Amsoil has been the best.

But even Amsoil eventually "wears out"... I just sent a sample of it for UOA to see if I can figure out what is changing that causes the shifting to deteriorate.

SteveD:

Exactly, the fluid seems to wear out and displays aht hard shifting/won't go into gear mode. I may try Amsoil next.

Expect the PZ to do the same thing, only it deteriorates in about 1k miles... the really nice characteristics wear out quickly in PZ IME...

I have a little more than 10k on this change of Amsoil, and even now it is starting to fall off in performance.

Interesting. I'm about to put 2-3 K miles in the next three weeks and going to tow 5er out to may Madness in April. I'll follow up w/ results. Mine seemed to have tapered off sharply at during the last 3K miles of 30K on the last fill.

maybe later today I will post a survey of how many miles between fluid changes to see how wide the diversity is.

I'm still trying to figure out how to change the fluid on my 6 spd NV5600... the service manual I just got from Genos wasn't much help.

Here is a UOA of Amsoil MTF in my NV5600... I just got this today!

Removed the UOA... placed it elsewhere...

The short... seems the fluid is shearing too thin.
