I am looking for a little more power for my 01 in my sig. Unfortunately it has 3. 55s and don't like hills too much when I have the horse trailer on the back. I'm just wondering what you guys would suggest for a power adder that won't kill the transmission. I'll be getting gauges and intake and exhaust in the near future. Thanks

smarty

If I was you I would get a smarty. You shouldn't have transmission issues with using a smarty.

Smarty and auto

The smarty adds power early in the power band before transmission pressure builds. Could be a problem if you don't raise line pressur. I would only use it on the milder setting where power comes on later but is pretty much equal at the top. I had an EZ with no problems but when I added RV275 injectors it went south quick. Remember the HO with 10 more hp was not available with the auto, that tells you what DC thought about their own transmission. DW

I ran a Diesel Dynamics true torque power module on my '01 with no problems. I upgraded to the Edge Juice w/attitude to get the gauges. 6 months later I am pricing transmission upgrades! The truck does have 120K miles on it so it may not be related. I really like the attitude just for the compact gauge readout. I'll make you a sweet deal on a used DD TTPM. PM me if interested.

TWilkening, I wouldn't put any more power to it without at least upgrading the TC, and preferably VB and Controller. As innocent as it seems in the beginning, wear takes time.

I ran my 00 3500 for approx 22,000 miles with a camper in the bed (Axle weight was 11,820 lbs) and towing a small trailer (1,680 lbs).

The only modifications to the truck were a BD Plug n Power and holes popped into the factory air box to allow more air. The holes came about in traveling in Southern States during winter.

The truck went on the road with approx 500 miles on the odometer. When the trip was nearing the end and the 47RE was showing signs of slipping on acceleration while loaded. I did pretty much baby it as much as I could throughout the trip while monitoring the EGT gage.

The thing to remember is Cause and Effect:

More fuel = higher EGT's.

Higher EGT's = shorter Transmission life.

Good Luck in Your Decision.

After the gauges and intake/exhaust, start saving for a custom transmission. Do it one and do it completely, you will not be sorry. I good transmission equals a good BOM.

Just let the transmission builder know where you plan to end up on power. They you can get a Smart or Chip, injectors etc.

I ran an edge comp for a while on 5x5, added smarty on 8 and it only went a few months before something let go. the smarty is great but it fuels hard from the bottom so when you tow I think it tears up the trans taking off. with a pressure lock or something i think you would be ok, I had both so it definately diddnt help

I bought my truck with 76,000 mile on it. The transmission was shift fine when I first got the truck stock. Then like every man in this world I needed more power. I added a BHAF, then the Edge Comp. Well I ran this box mostly on the 3X5 setting. When I hit around 83,000 miles I noticed something was slipping. I could not run it hard or the transmission would slip. I then installed a BD Diesel High Performance Valve Body. My truck then shifted better but not what I had hoped for. I could push it hard with out the transmission slipping. Then last Saturday while taking the GF to work I noticed the TC was not locking at all in any gear. Sunday I was on the way to my dads house (my Mech) when my transmission took a royal dump. It would shift in and out of 3rd gear. I rebuilt the transmission beefing up the clutchs and VB. The only thing else I could have done was added Billit Shafts. When they opened my transmission before the rebuild here is what was discovered. Over Drive was completely gone the clutch was down to bare metal. 3rd gear was totally burnt. My 2nd to 3rd valve in my VB was stuck closed due to clutch material in my fluid. Also my lip seals were leaking making me loose line pressure. We didn't even see how this thing was moving at all. I had the transmission built with better parts, more clutchs than stock, completely cleaned the cooling system and checked its flow. Increased the line pressure for a little firmer shift, and replaced the stock TC. I know this was not an ATS rebuild but this should do the trick for now.
