Truck has been sitting on and off for last year. running occasionally.
Apparently the local Chipmunks have made it their hotel. any time we use the defrost or heat we have to enjoy the chipmunk smell. Any idea where to look first? Anyone been down this road before?
Thanks

Years ago when my boys were kids they had several hamsters that escaped and made a nest in the car's air filter. The insulation that they pulled into it to make a nest wasn't any big deal but the dogfood that they had stored up was a real pain.

If you smell them with the heater on they are in the heater box/system. I would pull the fan motor, that should give you access to their nest.

Thank you, If I remember correctly that is easy to access too. I wonder where the entry point was? Maybe I can get in there too. I'll start at the fan motor though!
Thanks

Could have chewed through the fresh air vent shutoff from the outside, through the fenderwell. If looking up at the fan, it's to the right towards the passenger door.... They have quite the trip to get in there... up through the fender, and down behind the battery.... IIRC, that door shuts when the vehicle loses vacuum, or MAX air is selected, shutting off the outside air intake. I'm not sure you can see it from the fan hole, but may can reach it..... A wire mesh would do wonders to keep them out, but that's not an easy modification....

Among other things, they may have filled the air cleaner box with nest junk. Chris

good call, Nice little nest in the airbox and only stopped by the wire mesh in air filter.
Time to buy another air filter.
Heading out to pull the fan now. Last warmish day for a week.

Nothing visible from blower motor housing. Even stuck a telescopic camera in there but nothing found. Guess it must be further outside near inlet. Or possibly just drawing in odor from the air box nest. That nest was not very big though, and the odor in cab was pretty strong. I'll update later if I find anything. Or maybe it's just the trucks new odor. Well at least nobody will want to borrow it!

parked my Saturn one friday about 11:30pm,sunday afternoon i raised the hood to check the oil and a rat,a pretty good size one had built a nest behind the battery and was in the nest when i opened the hood.parked 2 days, under a carport right by my backdoor, made himself at home.

I had a pair of big pack rats attack my '95 Furd one night... I parked it about 10:30 right in front of the yard, hit the door, grabbed some chile, and fell on the couch.... I got up around 6 the next morn, got me a protein bar and hit the door to go back to plowing. Furd started ok, but as soon as I hit pavement, it had NO power... which says a lot, as it really didn't have any power to begin with!! I noticed it smoking a little as an oilfield truck ran up behind me, so I knew something was up. It wasn't light yet, so I went on ahead, about 15 miles to my other place where I was plowing. I serviced my tractor, and it was light at this point, so I pulled the hood on the Furd, and couldn't see anything..... There was some corn up on the radiator support, though... Odd..... some more down in the air intake.... pulled the air filter, and it was packed COMPLETELY full of corn, dogfood, and a little insulation from the hood.... Not even a full 8 hours!! Dirty boogers..... I've seen them completely pack an engine compartment....

This '82 Ford had been sitting almost two years....
