I have searched threads and may have the chirp in the pillar/cowl area referred to in the tsb for trucks through 2001. Mine is a 2002 though. Before I pull the whole dash back and attempt the procedure in that tsb I am wondering if anyone has found a miracle cure to a mysterious and VERY IRRATATING chirp when hitting small bumps? It almost sounds like something swinging against another part but I can not find it's source. Can't produce it by bouncing on the truck. Can't pinpoint it with stethoscope when driving. Greased, moved, bent areas a little with a punch but no change. Does this sound like anybody elses problem and did you perform or have the procedure done where the dash was pulled and a chisel was driven between a gap to separate the metal a little? Did it solve the noise?

Chirp

Mine was comming from the shift linkage inside the steering column.

I sprayed the column inside the cab and outside in the engine compartment with penetrating oil, it hasn't come back!!!!

Hope this helps it drove me and my wife nuts.

Chuck E.

I have the same noise from my truck I think. Anytime I turn the steering wheel you get a chirp/creek coming from the steering colum/dash area. Its super annoying. Anybody got a link to the TSB?Gotta fix this cause its making me not like the truck.

The link to TSBs is here however don't know if it is your problem. I have the same chirp as you - only when turning the wheel. The TBS is a chirp when hitting rough roads. Mine is silent unless the wheel is turned, and when turned will chirp on smooth or rough roads.

Think Chuck E may be onto something even though I don't have shift linkage (manual trans).

I have the same problem!

I also have that annoying chirp and am still trying to track it down. Try this thread for some possible answers. https://www.turbodieselregister.com/forums/showthread.php?t=124143 I have tried them with limited success. the steering shaft lubrication seemed to lessen it a little but it is still there. Mine is I think in the clockspring because it only chirps when I turn the wheel. I have taken the airbag out and lubed everything that touches anything in the column, including the tilt mechanism. I am going to remove the clockspring this weekend and see if that is the problem. I don't know if it is servicable if indeed the squeek resides within but I'll see what I find. Good luck to you all.

mine was the lower auto transmission shift linkage. it drove me insane and did not sound like it was coming from there.

Still not fixed

Okay so tonight I removed the airbag, the steering wheel, and the clockspring, I put a dab of grease on anything and everything that was remotely touching anything else. All the plastic parts of the clockspring that touch anything else. I lubed the steering shaft and all contact points between the airbag and the cast steering wheel bracket. Then I sprayed the crush tube area again inside and out, even the black spring around the steerring shaft in the engine compartment, and then drove it again. It is still squeeking, now i'm starting to really get mad. It only does it when slightly off center, driving straight is fine and it is a very light sounding chirp so I don't think it is anything with much pressure but still no luck. Oh well, I suppose the silence will be that much sweeter when I finally do eliminate it for all my trouble now. :p

try moving the shifter to 1 and 2 from drive and hit a road where the noise usually occurs.

if it lessens, changes sounds or goes away it is likely the lower shift linkage.

Same problem as my truck. No noise going straight. Gets worse the as you drive, after about a 1/2 hour of driving the noise gets really bad. Also in the winter it is gone. Mine sounds to be were the colum passes through the firewall. Gonna look at it today.

I bought my truck in December and yes, it didn't squeek then. yesterday I jacked up the front end and turned the wheel off center and sprayed again in different locations around the steering shaft. I am going to drive it today and I'll let you know if it fixed it. If you try this be aware that the power steering pump overflowed when I turned the wheel back and forth with the engine off. Not a lot of fluid but enough to drip so either remove some or stuff a rag under the fill cap. I'm getting closer!
