My alternator (I think), has begun a squeeking sound :( Is there a way to lube it? Should I wait till it dies, stops charging? Replace ASAP  Alt/batt gauge reads normal. Thanks for any help, (if replacement, tips on R&R please :D ) Patrick.

Patrick,

I think you can get a replacement bearing for those. Are you sure it isn't the tensioner? I've had those squeak a lot of times. Finally got a new one after I broke the old one.

Good luck!

Sounds like you shjould be removing the blet and rotating some pulleys to find the source. I always figure that if it's screaming loud enough for you to hear over a diesel engine then it's bad enough to need immediate attention.

Last thing you want is to end up with an overheated engine, dead battery, and a shredded up belt and engine compartment ( did I mention being stranded as well?) when you can prevent it.

Been there done that and prefer the prevention method.

Get a long screw driver or extension and touch the alt. body with one end then touch the other end to your ear and you should be able to hear the bearing making noise if not then do the same to other pulleys , also undo tension for belt and spin puleys by hand .
