Ive got a diesel performance center that sells ATS, Southbend, BD, HTS transmissions I was wondering which one would be best. Its gonna be towing a 16,500lb toy hauler.

Southbend sells clutch kits for manual transmissions. The rest of the names you mentioned are builders of auto transmissions. I have Goerend Transmission in St. Lucas, IA build an auto transmission for me and have been real happy.

HTS uses Suncoast and Dusty modifies his own Valve Bodies. I have an HTS and it is butch. My tires spin when shifting into second and I don't have that many mods.

And for those who are wondering I don't have just the HTS VB in my sig. I just have yet to update it.

Go see John at Floor it Diesel in Lawrence, KS. Trust me, you won't be disappointed. The stuff he's doing with auto transmission's is unreal. My transmission shifts so fast & firm my windows shake, and i can cherp my tires into 3rd gear no problem at WOT. Plus these other vendors you've mentioned call him for help when they can't figure out a problem. He's the best!

So, is the destruction of tires and u-joints the only way to show one has a strong transmission?

I like firm shifts at part throttle and firm at full throttle.

Not window rattling and driving over drive shafts!!!!!

The OP is using his truck for towing a 17K 5th wheel... . it is unlikely that he would want a transmission shifting that hard and leaving drivetrain parts all over the highway.

There are a lot of good Companies out there that will help..... I would go with the one that will take the time and go over exactly what you want to with your truck and how much hp you're considering and what weight and how often, you will be pulling. If you're a drag racer or sled puller, you will need a transmission set-up different than a heavy-hauler. You want a firmer shift pulling heavy, but you certainly don't want to 'chirp' 3rd gear and then have your trailer run over your driveshaft that just fell out.

Yea my truck is being built for racing, but I asked for him to make it shift that way. John will do what ever you want him to do. He also builds his own custom valve body's which allows him to be creative. Plus, in 3 yrs my u-joints and driveshafts are holding up with no problems. Dave Goerend gets my 2nd choice.

I had DTT build mine almost three years ago, and pull at a GVW of 29,280 with 35" tall tires and 3. 73 gears and twin turbos. The DTT transmission has had 66,000 miles put on it, about 40,000 at the 29,280 pounds GVW and it has done great and shows no sign of giving up the ghost yet. Frequent fluid changes with Royal Purple will prolong your transmissions life.

When you don't list the city or state where you live in your initial post other members are not able to offer helpful advice. Many know of specialists in certain areas of the country but the very best transmission shop in the world probably won't help you much if the shop is in San Diego and you live in Kennebunkport, ME.
