Like the Volt, the Wrangler and minivan plug into a standard wall outlet and can go 40 miles (65 kilometers) on battery power alone, but then a small gasoline engine kicks in to recharge the batteries. Chrysler said its vehicles will be able to travel up to 400 miles (640 kilometers) on 8 gallons (30 liters) of gas .

First, remember ENRON, supply&demand, gov't lost revenue to decreased fuel consumption, all will add up to higher electricity cost/taxes and perhaps mandatory GPS that tracks your every move (for taxing by the mile).

So, will they really cost less to own and operate?

no no no the way it works would be all of use will pay road tax per kwh on all electricity you use, like Propane in your BBQ or the Gasoline in your Boat.



lets say you burn 4000 kwh per month and you pay . 10 cents per kwh = 400. 00 they tax you at 10% you would pay 40. 00 you see we all pay the tax this way and none of us have electric cars



this way we can bail out all the dead beat ceo's that over lend on risky investements.



and one other thing where is all the power coming from for this can you say coal fired power plants. AND BROWN OUTS IN THE SUMMER!



come on people start thinking about what this is really going to do.

This uses a 110v - 15 amp cord - do the math - NO ISSUE WITH POWER AT ALL!!!!

sorry, but power usage is power usage 15 amp 120v is power it all comes from the same source.

plug to many in and you have a brown out!!



the power to run these cars is fine but if we all start using the electric to power are cars we will need to make more power how do you make power.



I dont see then building dams, hydro electric !!

I dont see them building power plants, Coal Fired /Gas Fired

I dont see them building nuclear plants

I do see wind plants but most the time they are sitting and not spinning

I do see the solar but thats a long shot on getting power when you need it

PLUG THE CAR IN AT NIGHT RIGHT.

at least a power plant even if its coal fired can run at max efficiency 24/7 just think of all the gas wasted idling at stoplights everyday.

These vehicles hold promise and are a much better alternative to electric only vehicles. Even so do not underestimate the impact they may have on the electrical grid. Doing some quick research showed a rough average of 30. 25 KWH per day for 2006 US household electric use. One of the linked articles stated it takes 8 hours to charge the vehicle using a 120v 15 amp outlet. So lets assume the charger pulls 10 amps at 120v for 8 hours which equals 9. 6 KWH. That is about a 32% increase in daily consumption.



Clearly areas like California, which has trouble suppling enough electricity now, would be hard pressed to generate 32% more electricity! Can the lines handle the extra load? Surely there will have to be special outlets which the utility will enable only during the off peak demand periods and which they can interrupt any time power is in short supply. Regardless of any utility efforts to control demand there will be many people who do not care about anyone but themselves and will find a way to circumvent any means to limit car charging. So if a major shift to these electric hybrids happens relatively quickly it would not be surprising if the utility companies have to play major catchup to generate and distribute the extra electricity needed.



And thinking it through further, to pay for the necessary electrical system upgrades, everyone’s electric rates will go up!
 
It seems to me that any shortage in the electrical grid could be upgraded, by using the federal money normally earmarked for oil companies in the form of increased assistance for homeowners/businesses wishing to purchase grid tied solar or wind energy systems.
 
The second someone comes up with a plug-in electric/CNG hybrid. . I'm in. We have tons of natural gas in this country and we don't have to share it on the common market like crude. It's clean, abundant, easy to get at and right here in the US of A. OPEC and big oil can kiss my ******* @**!



Although we do have cheap hydro power here in Idaho I think you'll see the grid being built up and enhanced by wind power in the future. T. Boone Pickens has a fairly good plan to get that ball rolling and in general I like his proposal. Yeah. . I know. . he's "big oil" too but we have to get started. I'm sure he'll make a bizzillion bucks on this project (these guy's don't invest because they love America) but so be it.



cj hall is right though. As this stuff comes online the price will go up right along with it. Even with the best hybrid electric car you'll end up paying something equivalent to todays $4. 00 per gallon. Nobody's going to put up more windmills only to see the price of electricity fall. Free market capitalism doesn't work that way. It's all about supply and demand.

BUT. . at least it will be developed, built, maintained, extracted, harvested and used here in our country... by us. It will be interesting to see if big oil even allows this to happen. I hear they have some pull in these things!!!



For now my wife and I have taken the path of least resistance. Conservation! It's the one thing they (big oil) can't control. I just refuse to use their product. Not completely. . but as little as possible. The Dodge stays parked for the most part and the Jetta (and Dodge) is running on B-20. The second I can buy B-100 I'll use that and no I'm not concerned over leaking seals and VP44's. I'll spend my money replacing those parts and supporting local soybean/canola farmers. . thankyou very much. What I refuse to do is spend one extra dime in support of an industry that holds a knife to my throat and says "here's the product you'll use and here's the price you'll pay... . deal with it". Screw them!



Anyway, I've ranted enough. It's your dime. . do what you want. Just know that there are options out there. Take a stand!

The Dodge and VW are the best ways of getting back a the Oil Sheiks they both will run just fine on B-100 and better yet they run great on clean dewatered vegetable oil granted it takes guts to run it but at least you have a choice.

I would rather see computer technology applied to traffic signals. There is no sense in the antiquated systems in use today. Many signals could be disabled, except in peak drive times. Others should be coordinated so the main road is not constant stop and go and so 30 vehicles are not stopped to let one across. MUCH could be done to curb pollution and wasted time by applying better technology to traffic signals.
