What is Chrysler spec number 5931? Power steering fluid for my truck or ATF+4 for the newer trucks? I dug through my owners manual and all it says is to use Chrysler power steering fluid (ya, right:-laf). Wanting synthetic I bought Redline power steering fluid, but all the things it says on the label (can be used as GL-4:--))have me concerned.

There is a difference between ATF and P/S fluid. There was a discussion in these fora about them within the past year or so.

I read that on the early 2nd gens don't use ATF+4, not good for the hoses. I don't know what year that gos to. I use PS fluid in my 96. If you don't have one try to get a Owners Manual.

Apparantly I have trouble communicating. I want to know if the Chrysler spec number 5931 is for power steering fluid or ATF+4.

I stated "Power steering fluid for my truck ". I stated "I dug through my owners manual and all it says is to use Chrysler power steering fluid". I KNOW I do nor want to use ATF+4. I KNOW that ATF+4 IS the power steering fluid used on 2004 and later Dodges, that is where the confusion comes in. I read my owners manual. I also read the label on the Redline power steering fluid bottle. It state that "Red Line Power Steering Fluid can be used where the manufacturer calls for any automatic transmission fluid, such as Dexron, DexronII-D" and a list of others, but not specifically ATF+4. Farther on it states that it satisfies power steering units requiring Chrysler Spec Number 5931. Then farther on it states it is compatible with petroleum power steering fluids.

As an added note it satisfies API 75W GL-4 bear requirements. I've never seen that on a bottle of PS fluid before.

I'm pretty sure I found the answer on another website late last night, but I don't really trust the free ones as much as I do TDR.

So, does anyone know what #5931 is?

The p/s fluid for your truck is the same Hydraulic type fluid used way back when across the board in Chrysler vehicles. Some oil companies have started making universal fit fluids-some work some do not.

5931 is the correct fluid Pt# 4883077

My 2001 factory service manual simply says fill with "power steering fluid". That's it -- no description or standard or alternative. It's probably just universal (tractor) hydraulic fluid.

What we have here, is failure to communicate!
Oh! *Now* I've got it!

Yes, MS-5931 is power-steering fluid. And I saw one reference that says "for hydroboost systems". Any quality P/S fluid that says it is compatible with Chrysler MS-5931 is good.

Finally, thank you Neal. I was losing hope:-laf

Bill and Gary, I know that the Castrol and Valvoline meets the same spec, but wasn't sure what the spec covered. I used to use the Synthetic Valvoline, but they quit making it which is the reason I went to the Red Line. The sad thing is, no one in town carries synthetic PS fluid of any kind. I had to order the Red Line online but didn't want to use it until I was sure it is compatable.

Now we all know:)
