Hi all, I was wondering if anybody has replaced the cigarette lighter in their '03. It's another one of those pesky "much easier the second time" things. I can't figure whats holding it in. The factory books says it snaps in but it doesn't seem that way. The outlet has gone bad from too much heat build-up with accessories. It might become evident when the new part gets here but there is nothing like experience. TIA, Gary

As I recall, there are a couple clips that pop out when the unit is inserted from the front. To remove, you squeeze those clips from behind, then pull the assembly out through the front.

It does "snap" in from the front.

Problem is it just doesn't "snap" out!

Take this section of the dash cover of and you'll see the tabs that hold it in.

Just cut them with a utility knife and the old one will all but fall out.

NOW you can snap it in like the book says.

You can use snap ring pliers with the tips inverted so both pins face out ward to depress the retainers. or Buy all the pieces and you will be able to see how it is held in place.

Well that was more involved than need be #ad
The reply's were helpful but just to clarify a couple of things. If you have a set of snap-ring pliers with interchangeable tips you can load them in so they are pointing to the left and to the right. Inserted into the outlet look for 2 small square cutouts-opposite each other-and those are the spots you want to push in. This position of the tool also works as an extractor and then the outlet is drawn out.

It will take some wiggling and I suggest if you are doing the outlet get the new ring. It takes some abuse but is re-usable. Once out it's easier to get the wire connector disconnected also. Thanks, Gary
