i HAVE A 2001 VOLVO SINGLE AXLE TRACTOR THAT i PULL MY FIFTH WHEEL CAMPER ..... IT IS RATED AT 33000GVW AND BOTH THE CAMPER AND TRACTOR WEIGHT 27555 LBS... ... I CURRENTLY HAVE ONLY A CLASS A LICENCE HERE IN GA..... NOT A CDL... ... . MY TAG IS CURRENTLY A 25999 TAG THAT NEEDS TO BE UPGRADED TO A 30000 TAG... ..... QUESTION???? ANYONE HEAR OF PROBLEMS IN OTHER STATES WITH THESE ODD BALL RIGS BEING PULLED OVER OR SToPPED AT WEIGHT STATIONS... ... . I DO NOT STOP AT WEIGHT STATIONS AT ALL... ... TRACTOR IS SOLID WHITE WITH THE LETTERING ON SIDE THAT SAYS ..... PRIVATE... . NOT FOR HIRE... ... RECREATIONAL VEHCILE... ..... BEST PULL TRUCK I HAVE EVER OWNED... ... . trucksalesdave... . central Georgia

In Texas, you'd be fine with a Class A non-CDL (GCWR 26,001 lbs and over and trailer weight greater than 10,001 lbs). Since you're not commercial, the Driver License Compact and its reciprocity agreements should apply - if you're legal in your home state, you're legal in the other member states insofar as licensing is concerned.

Several of these tractors that I've seen here... . have had a decal put on them..... something like this """private use only"" or ""recreational use only"" but my thoughts are that they will just draw attention to you..... Rusty is right... as long as its non comercial your home state sets the standards... . BTW - some states are now requiring an upgraded drivers license for these rigs..... once you tow for hire all bets are off.....

I heard the other day that rvers will need a cdl for over 26001 Jan1 ? any budy else heard this?

I'm a moderator on iRV2.com, so if this were true, the RVing boards would be burning up. It hasn't even been mentioned. As I said, the rig in question would require a Class A non-CDL in Texas.

I have a good friend in Van BC Canada... . In BC he had to get a special license to pull his 5th wheel trailer..... don't know the exact weight or if it was by length... his was 35 ft plus his 1 ton PU..... and before the dealer would deliver the trailer he had to have the license..... His problem in Canada was the backing and parking test at 45* .....

CDL requirements say 26001+ has to have a Class A, but there are exemptions, namely, farm use, and RVs. I have always thought there should be some licensing for these geezers who get in their $500K+ land yachts and only have a license to drive a Corolla. I also think farmhands need a CDL for driving a semi truck to the elevator.

Thanks Grey Wolf,so I guess many of the heavy rvers in Cali need a non-comercial class A now. One more reason to be happy with my light weight airstream.

Cdl

Wouldn't cost much in time or money to go and get a class A CDL. Thats what its named here in OK. Basically the one you need for any combination vehicle. A class B here is only good for a trailer under 10k lbs. The thing they may get you with is your current liscence does not (I assume) have an air brake endorsement, and if your truck is so equiped could be an issue. The process of obtaining the CDL could be beneficial to your knowledge and could even help your insurance a little, being a commercial professional driver 10-4?

My understanding has always been over 26,001 gvw and 10,000 trailer weight you need a CDL and for the third charm the air brakes. Just my . 02. Most farmers don't need a CDL but they don't generally leave their home state and many times don't get more than 2 or 3 counties away. Toodle-oo
