My 06 has been very quiet since new. Now with 20K on the meter it seems louder at idle. Do I need to adjust the valves or something? Or is this normal?

My O6 seems louder than when I bought it 27,000 miles ago. Here is my take for what it is worth. I had a 98, 24 valve: when I stepped out of it into the 06 it seemed too quiet to be a Cummins. I think as I got used to the new, much quiter engine, it seemed to have gotten louder.

2006, Bighorn, 49re, Automatic, quad cab.

Although completely unnecessary (per the owner's manual and all Cummins specs for these engines), I went ahead and adjusted my valves at just over 27k on my 2005. The difference was incredible.

I used to have a loud "clatter" or rattle at idle (... . ok... . not the sound of diesel combustion!). I had initially thought it to be caused by an injector. Once I adjusted the valves, the sound was gone and the truck is MUCH quieter now.

I assure you, I like my truck loud, but the difference before and after adjusting the valves was unbelievable. I have read that the factory settings are not very consistent and some TDR members recommend taking the time to set the valves right yourself. Just be sure to get a consistent feel/pressure on the feeler gauge for every one of the valves.

I'm not saying this will work for anyone else, it is just my experience!

Best of luck!

I have had 2 06 trucks under 100 mi that had push rods come out because the adjustment was so loose #@$%!

If it were mine I would run the valves first.

Hmmmm, I just posted in the General Discussion Section about a funny thing that happened to my wife at McDonalds last week about the noise.

I just turned 3,000 miles on mine so I was going to take it to the Dealer and get all the fluids changed. I'll ask if mine is too loud or to just leave it alone for now. I don't use any additives just yet and probably won't until after the warranty goes out, or unless someone on top of the Cummins or Dodge food chain says it won't bust my warranty.

Good site, glad I joined since I'm learning a lot about the diesel world. :)
