I am going to give the truck a good wax this coming Saturday. When I usually wax, I just use Meguires Scratch X, or Clear Coat Paint Scrub, to clean the clear coat before applying the wax. But this time I was thinking of using a clay bar. There is a lot of rail dust spots on there ( more than usuall  ). So I was thinking a clay bar is probably the best pre-cleaner to use.

What brand of clay bar do you guys recomend ?

And I've never used a clay bar before, so any tips would be great also.

TIA

I have claybared my rig 3 times scince I have had it and each time I get squeemish at doing it. It sounds like you are dragging 80 grit sandpaper over your baby. But Lo and behold the end result is nothing short of a perfect finish. USE TONS OF "LUBE" If you run out of the supplied lube use even a VERY mild and serously diluted soapy water solution as you will be waxing soon enough anyhow.

I would reccomend ClayMagic. However my last time doing this I have discovered the synthetic bars much more effective. Get two and blend them. And keep kneeding whilst use. Again do not be afraid of the sound.

I'm getting ready to do the same, and was recomended Zano. I've seen pictures of rigs done, and the look incredable! I read somewhere that before starting you should wash the rig with Dawn dish soup. This gets off any other waxes that might be on there. Good luck!

Yes any grease removing dishwashing detergent should remove the majority of "surface Wax" component. The clay bar in a sense removes all Surface contaminents and hold on to them inside the clay bar itself. Those conaminents will never come in contact with the surface again as the clay holds them deep enough as to not harm the surface. Keep the bar warm ish by kneeding it constantly and you should be good to go. My dualie fenders never were right from day one so to bring them back I clay bar them smooth then wheel them out with Finesse-it and they come back allmost to a matching white. Do this: Wash the truck and really take notice of a specific area by running you hand over the surface before you begin clay baring. Start that panel area you just inspected first by going in all directions with the bar keeping plenty of "Lube" on the surface as the bar should glide and not drag across the surface. Then run your hand over the area and all "Stubble" should be gone, truly I think you will be amazed. I cannot stress enough that the sound it makes will freak you out a bit but if you keep the bar kneeded no ill effects will happen.

Zaino makes a fantastic bar as well. There are many to choose from but I also found the mothers bar to be tough to work with. The Clay Magic ones I use just recently are great! Keep them stored in a plastic bag with a ton of lube inside that way it won't dry out. The new synthetic ones seem to somehow do a better job but i need to check them out a little more as I need to detail the mustang soon and will use one of those.

I will probably give the Cay Magic a shot. I got on to their website and they listed Autozone as a place to buy, but Autozone said they no longer carry Clay Magic. So I called around and found it at Pep Boys.

Does 1 of the 100 gram bars do a whole truck ?

I would assume that 1 of the 100 gram bars would be enough since they list a 200 gram bar, that will do up to 20 vehicles.

Thanks for the help !

Sorry about that

I got to typing a little faster then I should.

I have the 200 gram blue clay magic bar, I have done my truck at least 25 times and several other cars, and its still as good as new, it will last a long time. The key to doing a clay bar is the lubricant you use, I ALWAYS use the Auto magic Body Shine # 49 and a towel to wipe it off. I do that every time I wax and you would be amazed at the crap that the clay bar takes off. Just read in his website above, this guy is a freak when it comes to keeping cars clean and he only works on high end cars, BMW, Mercedes, Lexis.

His shop is right next door to mine and I can tell you he knows his stuff, he is a judge at the Conquers d'Elegence at Pebble Beach if that tells you anything... ..... and a good guy too

I used the Mothers brand of clay bar, but ordered the Zaino one, when I ordered the polish. The Zaino clay bars look identical to the Mothers brand. I picked up the Mothers clay kit, which has the clay bar, the detailing spray, that you use as lube, and a small bottle of wax. The clay treatment really brings out the metalflake in the truck. You will be amazed at how the section you did feels in comparison to a section you haven't. The Zaino bros polish is as good as they say it is. It also goes a long way. Their site has a lot of cleaning/waxing tips on it also.
