At about 425k klics, I'm wonderting if I should get my injectors cleaned. Is this a scheduled maintenance item?

Cold mornings I'm getting some blue smoke, but it goes away after a few minutes.

thanks

425K or 42. 5K?

I think its a good idea to run some injector cleaner in your fuel tank at least every 10k (miles) as a maintenance item. This may hurt that tanks fuel economy depending on how much you shocked the system with. .

I pulled some injectors from a stock 1st gen recently at 100K(Mi. ) the owner had not used injector cleaner. Cylinders no 5 and 6 were definitely ready for some cleaner. .

Blue smoke might be a bit of engine oil passing by the valve train or the piston rings, if 425,000 kilometers are on the odometer.

I don't think its anything to worry about as long as the oil consumption is not excessive (less than a qt. per 2000 mi or so), unless you have money to overhaul the engine (the cost benefit of this might mean a new truck).

That 03 is tempting, even though its missing the beloved P-pump.

Good luck

Andy

Whats a good cleaner to run in the tank?

I got some gas/diesel injector cleaner from a local parts store they claim it works well.

awfull dry stuff (no lube)

I havent ran it yet cause I am worried about my running my pump on that no lubed stuff.

any ideas?

I prefer the Cummins Injector Cleaner.

The Redline Injector cleaner found at all Pep-Boys and other Redline dealers works ok too.

If it meets the "Cummins, Cat, etc. ASTM specs. . and so forth. . " on the back of the bottle its probably fine.

Siloo (sp) and Power Service are popular at Napa, O'Reily's, Auto Zone etc and work ok too.

Standadyne makes a good product too, but this is usally only sold at Stanadyne (pump shops) dealers.

One more which is easy to get is Amsoil diesel fuel conditioner.

I have seen Silo in a auto parts store but they were in 5 gallon buckets, to much for my needs, Amsoil comes in 12/16(?) oz. containers (treats 100 gal) so I split it between both trucks about twice a year.

Drag something heavy up something steep. Hold 1200*+ EGT for an hour or so. Injectors will be as clean as they are going to get short of a mechanical cleaning.

Thanks guys

That run up the hill actually happens for me quite often while pulling a trailer, but only for a minute or so. . :)

I was told by my Cummins dealer 2 years ago that MOST fuel additives are not good for the P7100 injection pump (too dry or something) and to not use them. Of course he sells Stanadyne.

Probably a waste of money getting injectors cleaned.

Probably a little off topic, but.....

My local Ford dealer just recomended that I have the injectors flushed/cleaned in my 2002 Powerstroke at 30,000 miles (I'm at 25k now). No problem, I said, how much? $350. 00. WHAT? I told him I could buy a whole set of NEW injectors for my Cummins for that much. Jeez, I see a new Dodge 4 door sitting in my driveway next year.
