I checked my IAT the other day, just for fun. I noticed it was all oily and kinda icky. I cleaned it with electrical contact cleaner and reinstalled. Right away I noticed it started easier and ran a little smoother and quieter. I also noticed a smoother (and more) power increase. No doubt this will improve my economy. I thought something was fishy, not too long after I installed my "oil type" air filter my MPG dropped about 3. 5 mph! Now I just need to switch to a non oil type to help keep it clean. I wonder what the MAP sensor looks like.

jtisdale, do you think your IAT sensor was oiled from the Amsoil air filter? I have been running and Amsoil filter for 40K+ miles and when I checked my intake area it was bone dry and very clean. Maybe you are overoiling it. You should take a look at your turbo vanes and see if there is oily buildup on them, that would be an indication of overoiling.

Had a K & N........

When the original IAT thread was running some months ago I checked mine and it was oily also. That was with the K&N in for only a month. Switched to the BHAF and haven't had a problem since. If the filter was over oiled it came that way from the factory. I'm not bashing K&N's, some use them with no problems. I choose not to.

Yes, that is what I suspect. However I put the filter in new, pre-oiled. I would think it would have the correct amt. on it from the factory? Either way, I think its going back in its box and back on the shelf.
 
MAP SENSOR?

Has anybody pulled the MAP sensor and cleaned it? Mine is probably well lubed, considering how the IAT looked. Can I clean the MAP sensor with the contact cleaner as well?
 
I have been using a K&N for 26 of the 27 thousand miles on my truck and after reading the threads that say the oiled filters gum up the sensors I decided to take out my IAT sensor today. I fought with the sensor only to find it as dry as a bone. Darn, I was hoping to find it dirty to get better mileage. :)

If you're running any fueling box or boost module then you don't need to worry . The modules are masking the Map sensor so the Ecm doesn't see it. However without one then I would clean it. My 2 cents worth. :)
 
The biggest concern with the Map sensors is not the pressure head ( for lack of the correct term), it's the electrical connections. Do your truck a favor and lube those 3 posts with a small dab of dilelectric grease, it cured all of my check engine light/codes set blues. I pulled mine for a check last fall, very little carbon build up.

Chipstein, Correct me if I'm wrong........

The boxes only takes inputs from the MAP and alter them. It still needs to see a signal from that sensor to operate correctly. At least that is my understanding.

I could be wrong,correct me if I am,but even with a fueling box you still need a properly working map sensor,it gives the computer the proper siginals until you reach around 20# of boost,any higher than that then the box starts lying to the ecm. After Marco replied to one of my posts Ive tried to do a little research,havent learned much though.

You guys might be right though I was told that as long as it was working cleaning wouldn't make much of a diff. It could be that I was told a crock of I TRIED TO BY-PASS THE CUSSING FILTER. ;)
 
Relocating IAT.....

In the check IAT and cleaned IAT posts from 6-8 months ago, someone,probably Marco, proposed relocating the IAT forward to see what would happen to fuel mileage and power. It would be a lot easier to get to if it were in the air horn. Perhaps one of the electrical geniuses out there (here) could rig up some sort of "riostat" to vary the signal going to the ECM and increase or decrease fueling based upon the modified readings going to the ECM!!!



Oh well, just a thought in cyberspace.

Yes, I have relocated my IAT into the intake horn.



I've done it several months ago, so far it seems to work.

No more grime on the IAT. The mileage, if there has been any increase in MPG than it's so low that I can't see it. If anything the MPG isn't worse than before.

What I can say for sure, the smoke is less now. That's not bad...

I've also noticed that the heather would cycle even if I stoped the hot engine only for a few minutes and then start the engine again. With the IAT in it's stock location that doesn't happen. But again getting less smoke... .



All in all the engine feels a little snappier than before, altough there has been no increase in HP. (SOTOP meter)



Would I do the relocation thing again?

Definitively, YES.

Marco. . anyway you can e-mail me a way to relocate mine? I don't know what all is involved or if the harness needs to be made longer.
