I have oil leaking from all of my valve cover gaskets, as well as from lower down on the engine, so I need to clean my engine compartment before I start working on things. What is the best cleaning method you all have found?

Can I just go to the carwash and spray hot soapy water in there, or will the high pressure water cause problems with seals, wires, etc? I have a '98 12-valve, so there shouldn't be too much electrical stuff to worry about, is there?

I tried some of that foaming engine cleaner once, but it didn't seem to do a whole lot of good.

Thanks,

I've used the car wash many times. I usually try to wash under the hood when for some reason I've been parked near a carwash and the engine has cooled. Just don't seem right to pull a hot engine in and start hosing it down.

If the wash has a engine wash or tire clean mode, I use that, let it set a minute or two, then start washing, not being super cautious, but making an effort to keep the pressure off the computer, and major electrical connections.

Never had a problem other than sometimes the water in fuel light might stay on for a few miles. If things are really dirty, it might take more than one effort to clean things up. Be sure to wear a old long sleeve shirt, and cap. It is messy.

Good luck, RR

Check your local Costco and see if they carry "Oil Eater". Comes in a gallon jug with a small spray bottle attached. This will dissolve the oil and will wash off with water. Be careful, it is strong stuff. I also use it to clean the white wall tires on my wife's car.

Thanks for the tips, guys. I'll see if I can find some Oil Eater. I've also heard that Zep is supposed to work pretty well.
