Cleaning Road Tar.

Well the road commision started paving the road out infront of my house today ( A day earlier than they said) and when I got up to go to work the road had the first layer of tar on it. I had no choice but to drive through it slowly to get out to the main road. I now have Tar on my nerf bars, front 1/4's and rear 1/4's and mud flaps and exhaust.



What is a good tar remover that wont damage paint and chrome?



In the past I have used Mineral Spirits but this has always been on my $500 specials that were usually rust and primer grey in color.



Any help would be appreciated. Truck is now parked about 3/4 of a mile away, man was that a fun walk carrying a 18month old, diaper bag, wearing a suit in about 80deg sun! What a day for summer to deceied to come to Michigan LOL.

I have had good success with Turtle Wax Bug and Tar remover. It does require a lot of rubbing but leaves it clean and shiny when done.

WD-40 works

I use 3M adhesive and tar remover in the blue aerosol can, the tar just melts off.

A second vote for WD40. Works better than any of the speciality products I have bought and is a lot cheaper.

Can the 3M stuff be found at a Pep boys/Murrays/Auto Zone type store or is it a specialty type product?

I bought it at the local auto parts store. it isn't a specialty product that I am aware of. The only downfall is that it will strip the wax off so you'll have to wax it afterwards.

Ditto on the 3M product. Also i found that a product called Dry Wash and Gaurd works well also. I found it on line.

This may not be much use if your looking for something to just spray or wipe on to remove the tar, but... I use Meguires Shampoo and Conditioner ( for your truck ) every time I wash my truck. Here in Utah repaves are just a normal part of the scenery, so my truck ALWAYS has a little bit of tar on the rocker panels. With the Meguires Shampoo and Conditioner, I can't believe how easy it is to remover the tar. Just some very light rubbing with my wash mitt and it's gone

From Personal knowledge, Diesel makes for a great parts cleaner, and I am sure it would also dissolve tar as well. I know its easy on the paint, so long as you are quick to wipe it off, and not let it linger; but then again you would be crazy to do such a thing! Best of luck to you! I get tar from time to time, and that is my method of getting the nasty stuff off of there.
