Weird Brake Action

Took a look at my catalytic converter the other day. It is about half clogged with soot. Anyone know the proper way to clean out the cat WITHOUT destroying it?

I don't think there is way to clean the cat besides spending $800 for a new one. Best thing is to gut it,there are many achives on the subject. Gutting will cause no problems with a smog check if that's what you're concerned about.

Platinum injection is supposed to clean it out.
Maybe an old wives tale. Anyone?

I have two tools for that job. The first is a hammer. If that doesn't work, I use a bigger hammer.

I have a woodstove that has a "catalitic combuster". (looks similar, but much smaller) The directions say that you can clean it out with compressed air. I've done it, and it does work.
These converters on the trucks are HUGE. I prefer to gut it, but the above method MAY work??

I was going to try blasting it out with a pressure washer. I'm worried the Smog Nazi's here in Kommiefornia are going to catch up with us diesel owners soon. I want to keep my cat intact until I find out what the "Master Plan" is.

Today I installed a "Test Pipe" MOPAR p/n 52019170AB to see if my cat is clogged. As far as I know there is no time limit on the "test" and it does preserve my cat in case I need it in the future. It sure appeared clogged when I looked inside the converter. The cost was less than $50 and well worth it. Took a little over 2 hours with common hand tools.

Mr. Nerd,
Tell us more about the test pipe. Is it a straight pipe that replaces the cat? If so wouldn't a straight pipe from the muffler shop work and cost less?

Mudflap,

The test pipe starts out @ 3" and flares out to 4" for the rest of the way back. Your CAT is 3" in & 4" out, so you need the special pipe.

I live in Oregon and when I went to get "test" pipe from the Dodge dealer, he had no idea what that was. I looked at the micro-fich of the exaust and it shows as a 32" piece of exaust pipe used on models before the cat was required and Canada. It wasn't shown acually as a test pipe. Use the part number listed above and they will order it without a hitch! ENJOY!!!
