My K&N RE0880 took a beating on a recent camping/ photography trip. Lots of convoying on miles of dirt road. So, it looks like an early cleaning is in order. Question, what do you wash it out with and where? Not being one to poor oil down a storm drain, I don't want the filter oil to end up there either and I don't exactly have a parts cleaning tank. Suggestions???

Any of your major auto parts stores will sell a kit to sevice your filter,it includes a cleaning solution and oil to put back on the filter.

I just clean mine in the sink, there is so little oil and it is dissolved by the cleaning fluid that I don't feel it's a problem for the septic tank or treatment plant.

wash it into the sink (kitchen if'n you're a batchelor, deep sink if'n you're a hitched). the waste water is then sent to a treatment plant and taken care of... . unless you live in one of the older cities in the states (just a few left) like san francisco that has a combined sewer... . then you can wash it into the storm drain because it goes to the treatment plant as well.

Couple of hints.....

Newf... .

Since this appears to be your first K&N cleaning experience, you may benefit from my past experience.

Follow re-oiling instructions very carefully..... don't over-oil, or you end up with a real mess, not to mention running the risk of sucking oil into your turbo. Also, be sure to re-oil the prefilter (I'm assuming you have the 25-0880 pre-filter??) They should not be run "dry". You can oil it and put it in a gallon baggie and gently massage it both inside and out. Then, I wipe it down inside and out with an old cotton bath towel to get the excess off. Don't over-oil this one, either..... just a little oil residue on the fingertips when you run them over the surface.

Are you sure you really need to clean/re-oil?? I have a friend who is a grass seed farmer and has run his RE-0880 and 25-0880 prefilter all summer long in very dusty conditions. His pre is pretty ugly, but his RE isn't very dirty. You must have logged some serious miles on your trip.

Hope the DEQ doesn't come down on you... .

;)

I spent alot of miles on dirt (volcanic powder) behind 25 or so other, shall we say, less substantial vehicles. I was the shephard and my flock was abunch of city kids with city cars that needed to be put back on the trail upon occasion. 4 days of 10' visibility. I just think it would be a good idea considering the fineness of the dirt around the volcanoe areas. Thanks for the info though.

Rick is right, sort of the K&N oil is not petroleum based which seems to be your main concern. I believe that it is a blend of animal and vegtable oil. A little oil goes a very long way. only use about a teaspoonful on your 25-0880. Hope this helps.

Anyone want to know how much air ( C. F. M. ) the RE-0880 will move?

Want to know the formula for figuring how much air your Cummins will use at specific R. P. M. & boost?

Eric

  :D
