ok, i have read some threads about the new 3rd gen paint. I pick up my truck friday. I plan on keeping it for a while. Whats involved with this? Cost, benefit, is it worth it. I will be using the truck for work as well as my daily driver. I sold my 98 3500 recently with 332,000 on it. So I want to keep her showroom nice. I won't be installing any running boards as I know this would do a good job od protection.

So clearcoat more or not. My "600" is flame red.

I just had mine clear coated with two coats, but I had to 'cause I had flames done. I don't know how much it will help to add more clear, but it won't hurt.

I am thinking about trying Nyalic on my truck, but before I do the whole thing I am going to just try doing the hood or grille for rock-chip protection or on the plastic parts like mirrors & door handles.

V Mac,

Have you gotten any of the Nyalic? It sounds good, and I think I would try it too. The only part in the instruction's I didn't like was the paint should not contain anti-fish eye solutions. I think most add that during the paint process, how would you know?? Let me know if you find anything out. Sounds like it would work on polished aluminum.

OK I just ordered some Nyalic. I got a sample kit for $40 which includes a small can of the product plus their prep cleaner you use before putting it on.

Here is what they told me about the product:

Before putting it on you have to prep your finish to be as perfect as you can get it beforehand, because that's how it will stay. Fix your rock chips. Clay it, glaze/polish it to remove all swirl and imperfections. All wax MUST be removed. Once you get your finish "perfect" you clean it with their cleaner which is reside free (they said other cleaners work as long as you're certain it will not leave a residue).

Then you apply the product with a brush, it self-levels and anneals and will look like a waxed finish.

They said they have never had any problem ever with OEM paint finishes, the only time additives have caused a problem is with custom paint jobs.

The sample kit will give you enough to do your wheels and maybe plastic trim. I will either do my wheels or lower rocker panels or the frontal area of my hood for rock protection.

I heard the temps need to be around 70F to apply it so I should be able to put it on soon since we've been getting into the 70s already.

Vaughn,

This stuff sounds cool. I was thinking if its a good product maybe I would try it on my rocker panels. Kind of like an invisible rock guard product huh?

I just ordered a spray can. I wanted something to coat my yet to be installed anodized alum running boards to give some protection from the salt etc they put on the roads up here in PA. He told me also that in general they have had no trouble with OEM paint on vehicles but rather more with custom stuff, (to use a technical term). He also said I would have enough to do two running boards with a gracious plenty left over. A bit pricey for one can, ~$30. 00 US but if it is as good as it sounds, worth it. I might also try it on the front grill and hood area. I will let you know how it goes next week

Just to let you know, the paint on your new truck is CRAP. Chrysler knows it and refuses to do anything about any paint problems. It is good that you plan on running boards but also you need MUD FLAPS and a bug shield. Hitting the silghtest "nat" at speeds ofer 20 mph will chip your paint! My truck was delivered last November and in the first 500 miles I had over 100 chips. Im going to wait a year and then have the truck completely REPAINTED with REAL paint. Not the water base crap that the Mexicans sprayed on it when it was built in Mexico at 10 cents on the dollar. Chrylser=Cheap *******s

I agree if it werent for the cummins motor i wouldnt even look at dodge. There paint is crap. My patriot blue truck has about 50 chips and 20 scratches on it already. Really ****** off about this. My next truck will be a chevy or a ford, within a couple years the 6. 0 will be fine and i know the duramax is MUCH improved this year. Dodges quality control SUCKS. .

So, after all this money you're sinking into your truck to get it in the 500HP range, you're going to sell it in 'a couple years' and buy a ferd or chebby just because the paint sucks? Seems to me that for the price of sales tax combined with the depreciation hit, it'd be a lot better to have it custom painted with some real paint, maybe with some flames or art of some sort, and then you'll have the best engine possible and have something no one else has...

Ain't just DC...

Everybody is having problems with paint. The enviro-friendly stuff isn't yet up to what the acrylic urethanes are, and Robby the Robot is programmed to put on just enough product for coverage & gloss due to the outrageous costs of the materials. One PINT of paint (Flame Red) was $48 retail, plus activator, clear, etc. GM & Ford paint jobs are no thicker/stronger than DC's. Don't blame Juan because the product isn't up to standard, and the robot he's overseeing is programmed to put on the smallest amount of paint to save costs and the environment.

Juan Valdez should only be able to grow my coffee, not paint my truck. Had he used a 99 cent spray can, it would have been a better job. Also had he put all the body plugs in the truck, I wouldnt be getting cancer everytime I turn on the defroster. This truck, along with the worthless A-H's at Lithia Dodge in Grants Pass Oregon, are really ******* me off, not to mention some of the guys that are die hard Lithia supporters here that most likely bought their truck after they bent over and backed in to the showroom and paid full retail plus and did'nt even get kissed!

Has anyone tried the new plastic flim that some of the detail shops are using? AutoTrim tried to talk me into using the stuff on the front of the truck. I didn't ask a price. Hey PB my son when he was selling called it "bending over the desk".
