Help! I'm getting a P0191 code that I need to fix before getting a smog test. I disconnected the neg battery cables and reconnected and the code is still there without starting the engine. Does that mean codes don't clear by disconnecting the batteries? Do I need an OBDII tool to clear it?

Yes, you will need a scanner capable of clearing the codes. Run by a local auto parts store, buy some towels and hand cleaner then mention the codes need cleared on your truck. ;)

Do they really plug in diesels for state inspection in California? In NYS, the truck never meets the machine, like a gasser would.

Thanks for the replies. I will probably buy a scanner. A knowledgeable smog check guy said it would fail his $69.99 test. Another said the same.

You guys aren't going to give me crap about my Leaf???

I would really check what he said . A HD diesel pickup cant even be inspected where cars are inspected unless they can do big and diesel trucks in my area. Having a MIL on and wanting to fix it is another matter.

Didnt notice the Leaf in your sig. How do you like it? Seems like a fancy electric hi lo to me.

Yes, they plug it in now. No dyno test just check for codes I guess. I've been or talked to three different smog check stations and they said a code would fail. This will be my third time for a smog test...In 2010 and 2012 they just did a visual.

The Leaf is a good built from the ground up electric car. Very quick and responsive. It will beat most cars up to 40MPH. The problem is not enough range (60-80 miles in real life). I will probably turn it in when the lease is up and get a Rav4 EV with an easy 100 mile range and Tesla running gear.

Yes, they plug and check for codes. Any codes and it is a fail. You also may need a reflash to enable PIDS that were not turne o n from the factory on the 04 trucks.

If you find someone with a Smarty, he can clear the code for you. Is the problem fixed so the code won't come back?

I don't know if it's a hard code. I want to clear it and see if it comes back. The truck sat in the garage for almost 3 months but started fine. I have a friend that has a scanner or I might buy my own. What about the scanners that work with a smart phone?

The smartphone app scanners appear to be good, but I haven't seen in person. If you buy a scanner, there have been some discussion here (search) to get info. I'd say spend as much as you can afford and buy something that will also do your ABS and diesel systems.
I was curious about the wringer California puts vehicle owners through, and how it compares to NY. This is for general info- from B.A.R.--

(f) On or after January 1, 2010, all 1998 model year and newer diesel-powered vehicles, with a gross vehicle weightrating of 13,999 or less pounds, are subject to the Smog Check Program.
The following required inspections apply to all diesel-powered vehicles:
(1) A visual inspection of the vehicle’s emi
ssions control systems.
During the visual
inspection, the technician shall verify that the
following emission control
devices, as applicable,
are properly installed on the vehicle:
(A) computer(s) and rela
ted sensors and switches,
(B) crankcase emissions controls,
(C) exhaust gas after treatment systems, in
cluding catalytic convert
ers and particulate
filters,
(D) exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) systems,
(E) fuel metering systems, in
cluding fuel injection, and
(F) any emissions control systems that ar
e not otherwise prompted by the Emissions
Inspection System, but listed as a re
quirement by the vehicle manufacturer.
(2) A functional inspection of the vehicle’
s emissions control systems. During the
functional inspection, the technici
an shall conduct, as applicable
, an on-board diagnostics (OBD)
system test.
(3) An inspection of the vehicle’s tailpipe
and crankcase for the emissions of smoke.

Does #3 mean an opacity test?

I bought the $79.99 scanner from Harbor Freight. I cleared the code and then went to Costco and back. So far so good...the code didn't come back. Now I have to drive enough cycles to reset the smog monitors. Anyone know how many starts or miles that is?

I've driven 5 days now and I still have a CCM (comprehensive components monitor) "not ready" indication on my scanner. The scanner also gives me a green light indicating ready for smog test. The P0191 code is still gone! I will be driving several hundred miles this weekend. If that doesn't clear the "not ready", I guess I need a flash. It was flashed on 12/16/2004 with 18-037-04.

You need an ECU update to turn on those needed components. That requirement was put into practice well after your last update.

They check them here on the same equip. the gassers use.

Here is an iPhone (smartphone) setup I use in my truck, I bought a Kiwi Wifi and downloaded the DashCommand App. It gives me more then just the ability to scan and clear codes. So far it has been flawless and I have it permanently plugged in. I use it connected to PLX modules to see EGT, Boost, Oil pressure and several temperature sensors. As you can see in the picture I also have a "Lockpic" installed that has a video feed to my Nav

I had the dealer flash the ECM(?) on 4/15 and passed the smog test today. Now I am waiting for the replacement window for the window they broke on my SnugTop shell.

Thanks for all the help. I haven't had time to spend on this forum lately but it's sure nice to be able to get help when needed.
