When the VP-44 went south it set error codes. The shop manual says to use a scan tool to remove them. Is there a way to get rid of them without buying the tool or should I just make the investment. I plan to run this truck a number of years yet.



Any help will be appreciated. Thanks for all the good information in the past!

A code scanner capable of reading and erasing the Cummins ECM codes is required to clear them. The only 2 I know have that capability is the DRBIII which is the Dodge scan tool cost around $4000 the other is the Cummins Insight system I'm not sure what it costs but is likely not cheap either.

Try AutoZone - they have a scanner and will give it a shot for no charge. It doesn't always work, but you can't beat the price. I ended up purchasing software and cables for my laptop for around $100. 00 which does the job nicely. A plus to this solution is it will work on any 1996 or newer vehicle with OBDII.

The Auto Zone options sounds interesting. However, I am a 12 hour drive from the nearest Auto Zone... even if the truck were running. I do not own a laptop, though I would consider buying one. It might be worth the investment long term and would be good for other things too.



Can the truck be repaired and run with the codes still set and errased when I get to the border? Will it cause any other problems? Thanks again!

You don't have to own a laptop.



You contact TDR with a computer, use that one. You can put a 50' serial cable on the software packages. Ought to be enough to get from the driveway through the garage to the home computer.



Or



Take the computer to the truck. Long extension cord, multi plug in box, plug it all in and run the software from there.



Just an idea.

Where can I get the adapter and software?
 
I use R. D. Harrison software. Not bad, not the cat's meow though. Will read and clear codes though.



Do a search for R. D. Harrison in the TDR threads it will come up.

I searched for "harrison" and "pepper" and "obdII" and found several threads. If you still have problems finding them let me know and I'll write down the actual thread names to find, but unless you have further problems there are just too many to start writing them down.

BTW I checked my son in laws car and found his alternator was setting codes, so the obdII software can work for many other purposes, but of course CTD comes first :)



I checked both links for accuracy and both work just fine.
 
You can run the truck with the codes still set. They will go to inactive after the computer figures out that it is working now. When I worked on Dodges that is how I would tell if a problem was fixed take it out for a test drive and see if the good trip counter went to 1.
