ever since i installed my DD2's ive smoked like crazey when i shift (comp box on 3x5 when daily driven--5x5 when i "race"). i turned the box down to 3x3 to clean up the smoke but now i have real bad turbo lag. no power unless im spooling. any suggestions on how i can get better drivability without getting real smokey??? i know i need a different turbo--still researching what i should get (cant afford twins). also been thinking about the CaTHer. throw me some opinions. TIA,

chris

My ETH has smoked since I got it new. I know altitude has an affect because I can drive on the same tank from Vegas (about 2200') to Long Beach (sea level) and the smoke reduces. Outside temp and engine temp also makes a big difference. It also seems to run stronger after the first mile driven from a cold start until the engine warms up. If it put it on the 3rd EZ jumper setting it smokes like a freight train, even though the EZ is not supposed to make smoke.

I've done the IAT clean and check thing - resistance values check out at various temps so I'm not interested in throwing $$$ at it just to try a new one.

Since temp seems to play a big role, I'm thinking of adding an adjustable POT to the IAT - an in-cab dial-a-temp controller. Turn it up until smoke starts and then back it off.

I'll post the results if I decide to give it a try this weekend.

I just put in a Haisley Street Cam and that cleaned things up really well. With my EDM's, comp on 4x3, and my laggy-as-heck turbo I'd say I have 25-50% less smoke than pre-cam. What little I do get cleans up almost immediately. The install is a bit in depth, but his cam was only $425ish. Temps dropped 100-200deg on the top end, too.

I still haven't run a full tank of fuel through it with my "normal" driving techniques (babied it for a week 'till the fire rings seated then beat on it trying to tune some stuff in). What I can tell is that the egt's are at least 50 degrees-ish less cruising, so that's probably gonna give me some mpg back.

Throttle response seems to have improved, and the turbo lights slightly quicker. I don't think there's any power increase and I wasn't really expecting any, since the cam only improves airflow, not fuel quantity (in a diesel air=cooling, fuel=power). But it does allow me to run the box on a higher setting for the same egt's, so from that angle it does give me a power increase.

Considering the $425 cam is lowering temps about as much as my $1100 turbo, I'd say it's a pretty good upgrade (if you don't mind tearing into your engine a bit). I've since put my factory turbo back on and now have even less smoke (like *none* with the comp on 1x1) and really quick spoolup, and all but the highest levels on the Comp are very usable.

Sub level 3 on the Comp will de-fuel below stock 'till 10psi is reached. If you're used to running on sub level 5, things will feel a bit laggy.

pc12driver--hit the nail on the head. im used to driving at 3x5--when i set the comp to 3x3 it was LAGGY. sod it--im just going run the rig as usual at 3x5.
