Thunder in Muncie - gaining momentum

TDR at Timberline Dodge ???

I thought this might be of interest to some of the people here. It is a race up to the top of Mt Washington in NH. It will be held the weekend of June 22-24. From the website:
7. 6 miles in length (12. 23 Kilometers)
Average grade 12%, extended 18%, final 50 yards 22%
Road surface 35% hard packed gravel, 65% paved

That sounds pretty neat (although they make it out to be more of a race than Pikes Peak).

The nation's highest peak?? at 6,288 ft. ?? they must be kidding.

The foothills in the west are higher than that.

I did some winter camping on Mt. Washington back in the mid 70's. What they mean by 'highest' is that The base of Mt. Washington starts at near sea leval and the total rise is the highest.

I don't know the exact altitude of Mt Rainier's base, but it goes up to 14, 412ft. I live in enumclaw... very close to rainier, and our elevation is 735ft. That is quite a change from there to 14,412!

denali is the highest in NA

Ranier is the highest in the lower 48

MT washington is the highest in the northeast

I did my thesis on Washington. (geology)

I drove it a couples time and hiked it every way, every day. At that time I was driving a 1965 land rover which has 78 hp 2. 25L 4 banger and at 30 years old it was not putting out a full 78 horses. It is a fun drive. I did it one day in fog so thick that I was driving like a was in a submarine:D, with my research advisor giving direction when to turn( from memory):D. The drive is beautiful but to be serious it is the down hill that is scary. In one of these trucks the up hill will not be an issues at all but you should have an exhaust brake to get down or plan on a lot of brake wear.

If you have any questions email me.

Mount Whitney (14,494') is the highest in the lower 48. It's very close to Death Valley which is below sea level (-282') so the elevation change is a little tiny bit more than Mt. Washington.

Joe G. , Rob Hanson is correct... ditto for Ted C. Mt. Rainier is the highest peak in the lower 48, Denali in North America.

Colorado Rockies.........

Tallest "Rockie" is Mount Elbert, 14,433 ft. I climbed it a few years ago. While on the summit a storm rolled in and I had to hoof it back to my camp (a little below treeline) but ever had thunder be strong enough to knock you down???? That was the wierdest feeling in my life... ... . also the lightening you could "Feel" the electricity in the air... ... . it was definatly something to remember.

Also climbed the 3rd tallest Mount Harvard 14,420ft. Intersting enough Pikes Peak is only the 31st tallest mountain in Colorado at 14,110ft. Always wanted to climb Mount Massive (2nd tallest), and LaPlata Peak(5th tallest) they looked extremely awesome.

And um Mount Elbert is the 2nd tallest in the the lower 48 states. Mount Whitney 14,494ft in Nevada is the highest peak in the lower 48 states. Mount Rainer is only 14,410ft that would put it at the 4th tallest in Colorado alone!

Looked it up: Mt. Whitney 14,494, Mt. Rainier 14,410.

I just looked back at the website. It only claims to be the tallest in the northeast.

Actually I thought I'd get more of a response from the race part. I assumed some of the BOMBers here would be interested in running up an average 12% grade at whatever speed they could do. I would have thought the Cummins would have some advantage here especially with the grade.
