I rode on the passenger side of my truck for the first time in a while the other day and could feel a clunk when going over bumps in the road. It seemed like you could feel it in the floorboard.

Anyone else had this? Any suggestions? I checked my lower shock bolt it is tight and I have recently replaced my upper and lower ball joints. Everything else seems to be tight. My shocks (ProComps) have been on the truck for awhile might it be the shock itself??

Check ALL your bushings on the front end, including the control arm that points to the rear of the truck. You have a lot of weight on the front so a real close visual inspection is what is needed, since you will unlikely be able to shake and feel for movement.

Also check to see if the rubber thingy that stops the vertical movement (bottoming out) has been making contact - clean spot.

I had the same thump in the floor board. It was the lower shock bolt right side of the truck. Although tight, it had been worn to half its dia. and allowed the shock to move. I found it by bouncing up and down on the bumper and watching the lower shock move with the body, not the axle. Don't ask me how it got that way.

I think I am going to order a set of Bilsteins this week. I will check the bolt when I change the shocks.

As far as the bushings on the front end (control arm included) - Can you get aftermarket replacements or are these dealer items only?

Thanks for the replies - JACK

I used rubber factory type replacement bushings from Napa. They were alot of work. The rubber bushings were also more expensive than polyurethane. In the end I should've gone with an aftermarket type control arm. Others on this board have mentioned they don't flex. Within the last week mine started this exact same clunk on the passenger side. My shocks and control arm bushings are only 6months old. They were also properly torqued. I'm not sure what the clunk is.

Clunk on passenger side

I have the same problem on my 95 and have yet to solve it. Its annoying! I have replaced all of my bushings up front and that did not solve the problem. My shocks are tight and the ball joint are within Tolls.

Clunk

Sounds like the problem I had. Ball Joints. Had it checked at a truck repair facility. Couldn't tell by moving the wheel on a jack in the driveway. Had to get the whole front end off the ground and two guys to move the wheel enough to see the bad joint. Good luck.

cph :( :(

fishjack1,

Had exactly the same thing on my 99. Came from the factory that way. I checked everything in the front end & finally fixed the clunking sound & the thud on the right side floor board by tightening the cab mounts. My problem was sloved!!!! Rick

Thanks again for all the replies and suggestions - I've got a lot to check.

I ordered my new Bilsteins when they arrive I will check everything mentioned above and will let everyone know what (if anything) I find.

IF I have Control Arm/Ball Joint etc. etc. problems where is the best place to buy Luke's Links to repair. From what I have read the Luke's Link is the least expensive and one of the best fixes.

Thanks again

Jack

Clunk!

I have had the same sound since I bought the truck brand new. Now I have some things to check. Always looking for a reason to spend time on my truck. :D

The most common cause for this seems to be the track bar. Just about anything in the front end can cause clunking in addition to body mounts. From what I've seen though the most commonly worn out and replaced component is the track bar. See if you can replicate it by having the steering one way or the other, going over a bump, etc. I could replicate mine by steering to the right and into a driveway. Once you can replicate it have someone else do it and watch your track bar. If it's the cause you'll see it move - mine popped noticeably.
