just got my new southbend clutch and went ahead and got the 5th gear shaft fix. is there any body out there that has good instructions on putting the new shaft in the transmission, and any helpful hints on clutch change on 4x4. this truck is making me poor.

Can't help you with the fifth gear fix (I took mine in) however, my best advice for the clutch R&R is get a transmission jack or borrow one. The NV4500 may be lighter than the NV5600 but it's still really heavy, over your head, upside down... ... ... Oh yeah, get an extra set of hands to line the thing up too... .

Good luck. Let us know how it goes.

been there done that

when i worked at a race shop we used to do reg repairs to pay the bills sometimes. i had the pleasure of changing a clutch in 96 5-spd. i did it with a floor jack, that bad boy is heavy and with the transfercase hooked to it made that much more off balance. i bet the 6-spd is fun. i'll let you know how it goes.

Changed the clutch on a NV5600 and left the transfer case attached. Even with a good-sized transmission jack under the 6-speed, and a floor jack under the transfer case to help balance and stabilize the load, it was still a BIG handful for THREE of us to wrestle in. At over 400 lbs, its more than 2X the size of the 5sp. Great comparison photo in the latest TDR. Pulling the 5SP should be a walk in the park. And yes, the nose of the engine wants to droop with the transmission off, so your support for the engine needs to be up front... won't take much as engine almost balances on its mounts. Good luck and have fun!
