I guess I need to bite the bullet now and get the new clutch. Smoked the clutch all the way down track yesterday @ Truck Fest. Could only make that first run. , since I still had to drive home. By looking @ my current set up, what clutch sould I be looking at. I do want to upgrade the injectors, turbo, and fueling system in the future. TIA... . Scott

Were you drag racing or sled pulling? If your racing I'd go with a single disc from South Bend, but if sled pulling I'd go dual disc.

I was dragging and thought that it would hold since i had not experienced any slippage around town. The stocker does have 116K on it... . Scott

I've only had experience with the DD clutches (as opposed to an upgraded single disc), but if you're looking for speed in the 1/4, it's not the fastest shifting thing around... in fact, it shifts considerably slower than the stocker.

The upside, is however, that 3rd gear boosted launches are not a problem!

I have narrowed my selections down to the Southbend or the Carolina clutch. responses from owners of both would be great. TIA... Scott

i have a southbend and couldnt be happier. i cant wait to upgrade to the new DD though.

first clutch was Southbend CON-OFE - loved it... held 500+hp for LONG TIME

Once I started to want to do 3rd gear lauches in 4wd, thats was it for that clutch, I now have a DD 3600# 12-puck, again from southbend. .

I honestly think the difference of daily drivability is next to nothing. And the 3rd gear launches are rediculous ;)

Peter at Southbend will better guide you for dragracing.

southbend all the way. Great clutches and great customer service. Go with the 3250 plate load double disk sprung. It is a great application for drag racing and smooth engagement.

The DD setup from Southbend is top notch. However, noise, pedal pressure, and drivability become more of an issue. I would say how much more do you want to take your truck? Right now, a Single disc will suffice for you. And the pedal pressure is butter smooth, no extra noise, and cost 1/2 the price.

If you are going to constantly be working your truck, pulling, or dragging then the DD becomes more of a player.

i just went through this and think i caught you on the DTR site about the drags... . Not very nice on clutches, I have seen more than one smoked. I just recently installed a SBC DD and have had possibly some issues. Peter at SBC has been great, they really stand behind their work. They have sent a second up to replace the first. I was getting some fairly loud rattle, and the truck's throw out bearing was making some wierd noises. So, out with the first and in with the second. i plan on updating how it goes... .

As for you let us know what you decide.

I am thinking I will go with the SB Con FE, as i do need to maintain some drivability, and need the ability of smooth engagement when backing up heavy trailers, or when the Wife might need to drive the truck. This will be a hired out install as i am not familiar with clutch installs. Any thing else i should change at the same time that it is down? TIA... Scott

Here you go... From SBC

Clutch Kits for 2000. 5-2005. 5 with NV5600 Trans.

MU 1947 Con O - 350 hp, 750 ft. lbs. torque

MU 1947 Con. OFE - 450 hp, 900 ft. lbs. torque

MU 1947 Con. FE - 550 hp, 1100 ft. lbs. torque

Southbend Con FE is very grabby I would go with the OFE. But for the sprung DD if you can sport the $$$$. If you are pulling any loads with the FE it is a challenge on inclines and I have broke a U joint on one occasion from the grabby and bouncing. I could not get out of it before it broke. Just my 2 cents.

Thanks for the info, could I pull the sled a couple times a year with the OFE and be safe? Plus Im gonna be double boxed and turboed???

Not a chance. Only way to sledpull is the dual disk... MAYBE with the FE with the 3400lb load plate - even then you better be off that clutch instantly.
