Hey, folks, my clutch quit clutching, yesterday. I checked the fluid, then limped it home starting it in gear. Not sure what to do next. Is there a way to isolate the offending part? I have shade tree and tools, but don't want to just start swapping out parts. It's an '01 with many many carefree miles (300K+) 6spd,4X4. Thanks for any suggestions, it's only 10 miles to twon, so I can ride my Trek to get parts.

if the pedal still feels like it is doing something it may be the pilot bearing has failed and locked the input shaft to the crank. Sounds like time to call South Bend and order a new clutch (and updated pilot bearing).

With that many miles on it, I think I'd suggest replacing the master & slave hydraulics as well.

I'm getting a few more miles out of a stock clutch by changing the hydraulics after new injectors last summer.

Removed the slave cylinder from the transmission housing. Inspect it. I'm really not sure what to tell you to look for. Call South Bend and ask them. If you do buy a clutch, get the hydraulics with it.

sounds like when my master slave went out. It worked a little bit, then even with my clutchpedal down it would go into gear. then I could not get it out of gear. It was a long 10 miles drive through traffic!!!

If you experienced what i did get the master/slave kit, don't get seperate pieces.
get the master slave

I replaced the master and slave clutch linkage on my truck just two weeks ago. My situation was similar to JKidd. I was driving in the city when I thought I had to push my clutch in further then usual to release. I was sitting at a red light when I noticed I was creeping ahead. I had to shut off the engine. I could still disengage the clutch but if I held the clutch in it would slowly engage.

I just happened to be near the dealership where I purchased my truck. I stopped in and they had the complete unit, master and slave. The sevice manual says to replace both as they are not servicable. Later on my way home as I was shifting to another gear I felt a snap in the clutch with one traffic light left to get through! Naturally it was red. I found that the starter motor is fairly robust as I had to start out in 1st gear. I had a pallet of water softener salt on and a slight incline. The starter did not spin as fast as usual but it was enough to get the motor running.

I spent about 4 hours to remove and replace the unit. No special tools are required. The two units come separate and after you have every thing in place you push the couplers together. That coupler you will not take apart and put back together. I was afraid of some air getting into the lines but I did not have any problem. What took the most time for me was getting the master cylinder unit back in place. There is not a lot of room to get that thing past the steering shaft and brake lines. Watch where the lines go when you take the old one out.

Sorry this got kinda long.
