At what temp does the clutch fan engage? I have a friend who says his does not come on until he is climbing steep grades... and has never come on in the summer heat. He just wants to know if that is normal or does he have a problem etc. 2005 3500 6 speed 4x4

I have a 05 six speed and I was not sure when the fan came on full. The Ac would make it come on but not full. I add a switch to make it come on full and you can hear it come on and it is full on. I only use on long fulls when the temp get above 214 and leave it on a minute. It does bring the temp down, when it goes up again I turn it on. I am pulling a 15k fifth wheel. I understand that there may be a SB to fix the problem. I don't want to take mine in.

Fan clutch

Mine(2007 5. 9) comes on when the temp guage gets just over 200 DEG. and runs a short time as the temp drops below 200. It also comes on at startup after it has been shut down a short time on a hot day, but shuts down almost immediately.

A diesel eng needs more heat to run good if is to cool it does not burn the fuel good and does not have the power.

I hardly ever hear mine (see sig). . My dad claims he can hear the one on his 06 on every hill when towing, but I have only ever heard mine when stopped.

Dave, Where do you tie in the switch?

I was watching mine today... it was hot outside and I was idling with the AC. The fan pulled in at 208*F and cooled to 201*F. Mine is not tied to the AC.

I was watching this when I noticed it...

So when yours comes on is it loud and hard? I wonder if there is a way to test the fan to make sure it is working properly???

Mine doesn't roar, by any means.

You can tell it comes on... it does get louder, and definitely moves more air. But its not something you would notice if you were not listening. And to be truthful, I've only heard it when outside temps are really hot... I doubt I've actually heard it come on more than a handful of times in nearly 200k.

IF you have a P0483 you need a new clutch. It should come on with AC at low speeds and your ac won't work good if it doesn't

The early trucks would need to have an ecm flash to have the fan run with the ac... mine never had it, and my ac works just fine.

The flash came out in 05 if I remember correctly.

Your Smarty Jr now gives you that re-program.

But truthfully I rarely hear my fan as well. And the few times I have heard it the engine isn't even over 195*, but the IAT temps are high, so the under-hood temps are high. The ECM must use the temp sensor in the intake tube for some of the fan rationality.

The fan is also a variable speed unit thru a viscous clutch.

Rarely hear mine, just pulled 5ver this AM with ambient at 90* with 20K GCVW and never heard it come on, running AC climbing the pass out of Indio, Ca. The coolant temp around 205/210*, at least per the factory gage. On my C&C its the same scenario, don't you just love how cool the CTD's run. :)

Now if you had a GM DMAX you would never hear it turn off. :-laf
